Soma News aud Personal Notes From That Place. Pomona, May 29.—The weather was perfect yesterday, and the streets lead ing to tbe churches were thronged. In the evening, a very large congrega tion assembled at the Methodist church to hear the discourse on the National Guard, Boys' Brigade and Military Or ganizations in general. The speaker took no text, bnt set out with the idea that God had implanted within the bosom or being of man a militant spirit or feeling, the Miles bump, as It were, of his make-up; tbat it was inherent, innate, an aotnal characterittie of all men, more or less, of every clime, tongue and nation: and that it was cre ated or implanted within him for a grand, progressive and noble purpose, one far beyond and higher than ths mere results of war, although he affirmed that even this, in actual defense of borne and property under certain cir cumstances, was among the highest and noblest duties of man. Those tbat imagine that this fertile and lovely valley produces nothing scarcely except the semi-tr«pical fruits are far from the mark. Athletic Club Boys on Exhibi tion This Afternoon. A Number of Interesting- Contests for Local Amatenr Athletes. AH the Men Entered in Excellent Con dition—tiossip About the Contest ants—The SventS and Those Who Will Take Part. It is extremely probable that some record breaking will take place this afternoon at Athletic park. This is the eighth field day of the Los Angeles Ath letic club, and in the list of entries is found all the best talent of Southern California, and several northern repre sentatives as well. The young men are all In moot excel lent condition, and are eager for their cues to appear before tbe pnblic. It ia among the bicyclists, however, that the record breaking is likely to occur. The three most prominent riders are W. A. Burke, L. W. Fox and Wm. M. Jenkins. Fox is probably in better condition and has trained harder than any other man in the entire list of entries. Jenkins and Burke have not been training so indus triously as might have been desired, but both are riding very fast. M. Dozier, jr., is another fast rider, as is Phil Kitchen. They can also be counted upon to be in at the finish. In the foot races, Howard is the favorite in the 100-yard run. There is considerable Gard money in sight, however, and sev eral fair sized bets that he would beat Howard have been made. The olub novice 100-yard dash will also be a pretty event. Goodhue is from Long Beach, and does 11 seconds with out any trouble. Germain is a clever runner alco. He has not been training very steadily, and carries a trifle too much stomach. He will, however, be near tbe front. Harrington is another good man. The jumping and pole vaulting will also be interesting. The favorite in the latter is W. W. Weller of the Athletic club, He is an exceedingly clever man. He has not trained to any extent for the event, but if his performance ia any thing like that of last year he will in all probability win. Tbe programme will start at 2:30 p. m. sharp, as there are 23 events, and it is desired to finish all of them before dark. He was stand ing at the corner of Temple and Spring streets last night about 5 o'clock, look ing out for 67i1-doors. Suddenly he saw a man spring for an electric car going north on Spring street. The man grasped tbe forward rail of the car bat missed getting on the footboard. Pie fell to the ground and one second after would have been ground under the wheels had it not been for Officer Shan non's agility and strength. The officer sprang from the sidewalk and lifted the man's body, holding it up for a distance of over 40 feet, until the car was stopped by the motorman. Then the "would be" passenger, ex hausted by fright, could only thank his preserver as he was whirled away by the car. The man ia a well known brick layer of the east side, and the officer de serves at least one mors to his credit. A FRIEND ' '^ m ''nEED —The "Favorite Prescription."
