ALL ABOUT AN ORGAN. WHY REV. MB. ORABBR RESIGNED 818 CRABOI. The Refloat Controversy In the United Presbyterian Church of This , city — Some Statements Abont the Affair. Johnnie Morgan can play tbe organ to bie heart's content and the other members of that far-famed musical family can also distnrb tbe neighborhood if they choose, bnt a portion of tbe local Presbytery doee not think tbat it is propsr for the members of its church to follow gentle Johnnies example, co have decided that the organ, like the heathen Chinee, must go. While not coming oat flat-footed for tbe deportation of the organ, they have recently taken action in regard to the United Presbyterian church that amounts to virtually the came thing. They have requested the pastor, Hey. H. W. Crabbe, to relinqnish the charge of the church and this, too, in the face of protest after protest Irom the congre gation, the majority of whom desire Mr. Crabbe to continue his work at ttie church and have repeatedly so stated. Tbe action of the presbytery, it ie claimed, is due largely to the efforts of two of its members who have been op posed to Mr. Crabbe for some time past, and have now obtained their object in his recent resignation. Mr. Crabbe has had charge of the United Presbyterian church for nearly six years, but the difficulty with these members of tbe presbytery dates back about two years. As membere of this body they are not attached to any church but worebip at any of tbe churches of their denomination. Tbe first cause of the trouble, it is said, wae due to a certain reverend gen tleman who protested against the con tinuance of the use ot the organ in aorv ice. He first went to Mr. Crabbe quiet ly to Mr. Crabbe and etated his objec tions. Mr. Crabbe replied that as the organ had been in tbe church eince he bad assumed charge, he had no author ity to remove it. The brother, however, was not satisfied, and from then on wae loud in bis denunciation of the organ. The next protest came from the fair sex. The wife of the other member of the presbytery stated that she did not favor voluntary singing by tbe choir. She affirmed that one of-4he laws of the United Presbyterian church provided that only psalms should be aung in worship by the congregation. No par ticular action wae taken in regard to this latter protest, and from that time on the two reverends combined forces against Mr. Crabbe. A elight friction among some members of the congrega tion waß the result, but no serious rnpaure has as yet occurred. The church haa progressed favorably and thrived, bat the ever restless spirit of discontent has been alert, and haa at last accomplished the desire of a very email part of the congregation. Under the nature of Mr. Crabbe'a charge be ia reappointed every year by the preabytery, the congregation meet ing and voting for or againat hia reten tion. The decision of tbe preabytery ia generally influenced by the vote of the congregation. At the meeting laat year there waa but alight opposition to Mr. Crabbe, but at the one held aeveral months ago for the enauing year the minority ac complished their object by rendering a report unfavorable to the retention of Mr. Crabbe aa pastor. The meeting waa attended by but a email part of the congregation. When the vote upon the paatorage queetion, it resulted in 14 for Mr. Crabbe and 17 votes againat, tbia result being sent to the preabytery aa the deßire of the whole congregation. Aa the congrega tion numbers fully 90 active members, the rest, when tbe heard of thia verdict, combined and signed a secondary peti tion numbering 00 names. The petition waa sent to the preabyetry and asked for a permanent settlement of Mr. Crabbe ac pastor of the United Presbyterian church. Thie waa denied by the Prea bytery, and in the face of the fact tbat no remonstrance whatever from tbe balance of the congregation had been presented. The congregation not desir ing to lose Mr. Crabbe, then presented another petition aaking for a call leav ing tbe name of tbe pastor vacant, but thie was also denied. Another meeting was held, at which the members of tbe chnreh pledged suf ficient money to pay the pastor's salary, independent of help from tbe board of home missions, and another petition was signed and afterwards preeented to the preabytery, aaking that Mr. Crabbe be aettled aa paator of the church. Thia third petitltion, although repreaentiag fully two-thirds of tbe membere of the church, was denied. At all three meetings of the preaby tery, when the various petitions were preaented, the two brothers referred to above were preaent and conducted tbe opposition to Mr. Crabbe. Tbey apoke at length againßt bia retention and ex pressed themaelvea aa atrongly in favor of abiding by the report of the annual vote of the congregation. In view of tbe peraiatent refusals of the Preabytery to reappoint Mr. Crabbe Highest of all in Leavening Power—Latest U. S. Gov't Report Baking Powder AESOIJUTfiIY PUmm the membere of the church have be come leaignedtothe situation and have abandoned any farther attempts to in fluence the Preabytery to reconeider ite deciaion. Mr. Crabbe delivered hia farewell ser mon before the United Preabyterian church congregation Sunday morning, and haereaigned hia charge. Mr. Crabbe ie a moat estimable and able gentleman, and haa done much to warda building up the United Preaby terian church in thia city. Hie resigna tion of tbe charge haa been received with almoatuniversal regret, and where ever he may bo called he will be fol lowed with the moat kindly aentimenta by all. He wae aeen by a Hurai.o representa tive laat evening and asked for come ex pression in regard to the affair, but de clined positively to make' any statement. BITTEN BY A DOG. An Exception to the General Rale. In thia day of fake olearance and dia soliition aalea, some apprebeneion must necessarily exiet concerning tbe an nouncements of even the moat reliable firma.
