The motion to eet aeide the indict ment against Henry Vejar, by attacking the validity ol the grand jury, waß heard in Judge Shaw's court yeaterdaj morning. The grand jurors were in at tendance and were examined upon some of the points raised. The points of in accuracies in the empaneling of the jury were discussed by counsel, and ot the conclusion of the argument Judge Shaw denied the motion. He also ordered corrected the mistakes made in the dates on the venire. The sheriff was also allowed to amend his return by cor recting some incorrect dates. A de murrer wae then filed to the indictment and tbe case continued to September 28th. Judgment of foreclosure for $2530 was rendered by Judge Van Dyke yesterday in the case of Sarah W. Baker vs. Wm. B. Davenport et al. An information was filed yesterday by the dietrict attorney against John Sulli van, charging him with grand larceny, and September 30th was set for his ar raignment. An information waa filed by the dis trict attorney charging Charles Finke with felony. Ths defendant is a boy and this method is taken to get him sent to tbe Whittier reform school. Albert Scott entered a plea of guilty in Judge Shaw's court yesterday to the charge of assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to two years at San Quentin. Scott stabbed Peter Vike with a knife after trying to rob some fellow workmen in a camp engaged in work on tbe outfall sewer. NEW CASES. A short session of the fire commission was held yesterday. The business trans acted consisted principally of routine o Hairs. HORSES TO BB BOLD. The chief reported recommending tbat tbrae horses of tbe fire department be sold and transferred to street work and that throe others be purchased. It was moved by Mr. Wirsching that tbe report be approved, Mr. Kuhrta amending the motion by wishing to have tbe matter referred to tbe chief to see the supply committee of the council as to what price may be obtained for the animals. Carried. CALLMEN APPOINTED, The chief recommended the appoint* ment of J. R. Poole as callman. The recommendation was acted upon and Mr. Poole elected. Joe Del Valla was appointed as eall man to fill the vacancy at tbe East Side engine house, to take effect November Ist. COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE COUNCIL. A communication from tbe oity clerk to the chief was read, stating that the council bad ordered tbe department te> turn over to tbe street department 300 feet of hose. The clerk was instructed to notify the council that all hose of the department to in use. The communication from tbe city clerk stating that tbe council had ao cepted tbe new engine house was read aud filed. A FIRS ALABM BOX. A petition for a fire alarm box at the corner of Katrella avenue and Washing* ton streets was referred to tbe chief. MISCELLANEOUS MATTERS. A committee consisting of Messrs. Kubrts and Wirsching was appointed to inspect tbe new Burbank theater, aT the request of Dr. Burbank. Engine house No. 8 was finally ac cepted. Mr. Brodrick moved tbat a trap be added to the sewer connected with hose house in East Los Angeles. Carried. Two requisitions for the purchase of two horses were laid over one week. Mr. Wirsching reported tbat engine houee No. 3 had been repaired, painted, etc., and that the sanitary condition had been carefully looked into. m'maiiom badqed. At tha close ol the session the mayor, on behfflf of the commission and tbe lire department, presented Assistant Chief HcMahon with a handsome badge. The mayor made a neat presen tation speech, iii which he praised tbe assistant chief for bis efforts for tbe good of the department. Tbe badge is of gold, bearing tbe words: "Assistant Chief HcMahon. The meeting was well attended, and a pleasant time was passed. The exercises were opened with pray* er by Dr. Brodbeck, alter which Messrs. Ctiipman and Prosßer rendered a solo, Larboard Watch. Mies Mary Oppenbocker read a paper entitled, Wby Should the Christian Young Women Sign the Total Abstin ence Pledge? Mrs. W. J. Cook tben rendered a piano solo in excellent style. The Origin and History of Our Organ ization was tbe title of a paper by Miss Mary liotden. Miss WiUey, tbe president of tbe so ciety, contributed a paper offering a number of suggestions to tbe various 1 members of the union. Mr. H. E, Smith presented a plea for new members. Don't Let the Women Vote was tha, name of a duet by Messrs. Maeder, Carly aid Hermitn. At the conclusion of the programme ■ an informal social time was held.
