IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SANTA ANA. A Fatal Runaway Aoolelent—Grand Jury Report. Santa Ana, Dec. 16. —A man riding a bicycle frightened a team driven by Mr. Sitton, and they became unmanageable, tbe tags came unhooked, and the tongue ran into the ground, upsetting the wagon. Sitton waß precipitated to tbe ground striking bis head with such force as to break tbe eknll. The frac ture was from tbe temple, running nine inches back. Mrs. Sitton escaped more fortunately, but waß badly bruised by tbe wagon wheel running over ber. Tbe couple were taken to Mrs. Harris', moth er of Mrs. Sitton. Sitton was insensible from the time be struck tbe ground until he died, which occurred at 8:30 tbis morning. Tbe deceased was a resident of McPher ■on, aged 43 yeara. The funeral services wil! take place from the residence of Mre. Harria, near Orange, at 2 p.m., tomorrow 'Sunday. THE JEFFERSON CLUB. The Lyceum League of Southern Cal ifornia are bolding their annual conven tion in Santa Ana. The meeting waa called to order by President Wilaon of Lea Angeleß. George Taylor, G. Judge Towner received the grmid Jury'a report at 11:30 thia morning. It ia a volumnoua document. The report starts out by commending the Recorder, Auditor, Clerk District Attorney, Coroner and Sheriff for the efficient manner in which tbey have aetved the county. They find that there are 47 indigonta on the pay roll drawing $431 per month. The report further saya that the Aa sesaor atated to them "that hia books bad never been examined for the de tection of irregularities or false eu triee." Thia committee also Bays they found tbe Aaaoeaor has turned over to the Tax Collector, several hundred dollars as delinquent personal property tax, which the county ia liable to lose. THE COURT HOUSE SITE. Thia committee having in view the Inatructiona of your honor to ascertain If any infraction of the law had been tnade by the aupervieora or others in authority, whereby any contracts were made in one year to be paid out of the funda collected in the succeeding year report they found no euch caae, but in tbeir inveatigation found that the con tract for the court house aite waa made on Jept. 11, 1893, the purchase price being $8000, vu., $4000 cash and $4000 on or before Dec. 16, 1893. Tbe amount of caah on hand in jail and court, house fund September 11 1893, waa *r568.88, and on September 11, 1893, the board of supervisors ordered $2650 transferred from general expense fund to jail and court house fund. They further find the order for the Santa Ana river banks improvement waa made on September 11, 1893, and not to be paid for till December 15, 1893. and they find the authority for thla work being ordered by them in aeotion 54, county govern ment act of legialature March 24, 1893. the roads. We have further,in pursuance of your instructions, made examination of other banks of which complaint baa been made to na, and, aa to the defunct Bank of Anaheim, bave to report that the management of aaid bank bad been for several yeara before ita failure specu lative and imprudent. We think, if we may be allowed a criticism herewith, tbat tbe bank com missioners are cenaurable in not being aa searching in tbeir examinationa of banks under tbeir juriadiction aa they ought to be. THE CORONER. Complaint haa been made to tbia grand jury tbat tbe coroner hae created unnecessary expense to the connty by reason of having held inquests upon tbe bodtea of persons whoae manner of death was plain and nuqueetioned. Aa the coßt of bolding these unneces sary inquests ia conaiderable, we tbink a better exercise of discretion would be in the intereata of an economical adminis tration of authority in the coroner. Ban Bernardino, Dec. 16.—The ex hibit need at the world's fair at Chicago arrived laat evening and haa been placed in tbe vacant building on tbe north aide of Court atreet, near K. It waa overhanled and repacked for ship ment to the midwinter fair at San Fran cieco. Tbe Urge jara of frnit and the majority of tbe smaller onea are in ex cellent condition. An air-tight cabinet baa been put in and the fruit will be fumigated and then placed in new ayrup before shipment north. The re volving album will have to be unpacked at the depot and brought down.' The work of overhanling and unpacking will take about a week, when it will be Bent nortb. Some of tbe fruit shows signs of frost and some ia partially bleached. The bear and eagle arrived in good condition. BRIEFS. Miaa Alma Still well returned thie morning from the Angel City. Van Slyke came in from the Goler diatrict yeaterday, and brings re ports of immense wealth in that sec tion. He haa two aona busily engaged in taking out tbe bright yellow metal. The Christmas bazar given by the ladies of tbe Unitarian society laat evening cloaed with a bop. The music wae fine, and a large crowd enjoyed themselves until a late hour. The bazar waß liberally patronized, and many arti cles were Bold. RIVERSIDE. Hotel Girl* Go on a Strike for More Pay. Eivrrsidb, Dec. 16.—Yesterday the Olenwood hotel ot this city was the scene of a strike. The eirls who hare been employed in the dining room as waiters demanded a raise of wages, and refused to go to work till their demands weie allowed, a thing which Mr. Miller refused to do, as he claims to hold con tracts with them to work for $12.50 per month. At breakfast they would not work, and at dinner their places were supplied. In the afternoon one of them sent for her trunk, but Mr. Miller refused to allow it to leave the honse, as she owed bim for money advanced to pay her railroad fare from Cbicago. During the afternoon she swore out a warrant for tbe arrest of Mr. Miller and Manager Richardson, and they will have a hear ing today in Judge Potter's court. NOTES. J. H. Santa Monica, Dec. 16.—The Epiaco palian bazar at the Pariah ball etill holda ita magic away, and the ladies are correapondingly happy. The operetta Golden Hair, one act of which haa been given nightly, haß interested all, tbe characters acting exceedingly well, and the musical programme ia of the high est order of merit and artistic excellency of rendition. Tonight tbe concluding scene of the operetta will be given, the bazar to cloae by a dance. The excel lence of the operetta rendition ia due to the work of Mr. Dickson, who baa zealoualy drilled and coached the merry amateur troop, who have appreciated hia labors. The art gallery has taken immensely and Mr. Peckham ia the lion of the hour in consequence. firemen's BALL. The masque ball of the firemen thin year which will be given at tbe Opera House on the evening of January firßt gives great promise of exceeding any of its predecessors in brilliancy, and tbe number of superb prizea given to be competed for on tbe joyous occasion. Mr. Moon, who has the contract for grading Fifth street, cut down a row of trees which were in front of Mr. Dixon's property and in tbe way,and commenced catting them up for firewood. Mrs. Lewie, tbe tenant, bad asked for and been given the trees by Dixon, and so notified the contractor, who, paying no attention to the notice, was arrested for larceny and will plead today before Justice Twichell. A civil suit will also be commenced, and the friends of Mre. Lewis are determined she shall receive justice. The contractor is equally stub born. Korss. £. D. Suits yesterday received a fine carload of fat Christmae cattle from Se .v. ligman, Ariz. Mr. and Mre. A. T. A gentleman from tbe Lone Star Btate ia building a two-atory resilience on the corner of Thirty-eighth and Figueroa atreeta. Miaa M. Martin, who haa been spend ing aeveral yeara past vieiting in Jack sonville, 111., haa returned to Univeraity place. William Jackeon Armatrong, the lec turer, waa announced to speck on Gari baldi and the Making of Italy, for laat Friday evening in Univeraity chapel, but la grippe attacked the lecturer, and tbe lecture waa poatponed to a date in the near future. There are several caaea of sicklies in the community. The term examinationa closing the fall term of tbe university began today (Saturday) and will continue through hext Tueaday, Wedneaday and Thura day. Two weeks' vacation will be given for the holidays, and the college will as semble again on January 3, 1894, for the winter term. The children of the Mission band wili have charge of Sunday evening's service at the University church, and will give a missionary concert of recitation and song. Pasadbna, Deo. 16.—One of tbe work men employed on tbe immense addition wbich is being erected to the Hotel Green bed an exceedingly close call one day this week to bidding farewell to this terrestrial sphere. The man, who is a young fellow, was working on the fifth floor of the build ing near tbe elevator shaft, which prior to the putting in of tbe elevator waß left open, with a few board* placed around it to keep workmen from run ning into it. All the employes were aware of the hole and carefnlly avoided it. In some way, however, tbe young fellow in pass ing tripped and, to the horror of those who witnessed the accident, fell head long into the shaft, which had a clear descent of five stories. They rushed forward, expecting to see his mangled remains lying at the bottom, but were happily surprised so find bim hanging by bis bands to a piece of ecantling wbicb projected slightly from the shaft about 10 feet below. No time was loat in extracting the lucky fellow from hia dangerous posi tion, and it ia probable be will give ele vator shafts a wide berth in tbe future. Had it not been for tbe piece of timber wbich chanced to be projecting, and he waa fortunate enough to grasp, nothing could have saved him from inatant death. AMONG THE CHURCHES. At the Firat M. Redondo, Dec. 16.—Another carload of lemons was placed in Hall's casino today for curing. The lemons will be shipped to various northern points some time in January. Tbe Redondo natatorium is rapidly Hearing completion. It will have 80 in candescent lights; 40 at the bottom oi the large plunge and 40 six feet above tbe tank. Besides these, there will be three large arc lights, each of 4000 candle power. The Redondo flower garden is daily in receipt of orders to ship flowers east, some going as far as New York city. Uharlee Duster, who hae the contract for discharging the ship Verbena, today broke any of bis former records, lie discharged S4O tons in 280 minuteß. This is tbe most rapid work ever accom plished, especially when considering that a portion of this freight was of a light, bulky character, consisting of demijohns and empty bottles that re quired careful handling. The ship Verbena will have dis charged her cargo by Monday evening, and will reload with a full cargo of grain for Liverpool. Tbe schooner Halcyon is lying at an chor, waiting to unload 350,060 feet of lumber for the Stimson Mill and Lum ber company. The steam schooner Excelsior of Eu reka has just finished discharging 164, -000 feet of lumber for the Willamette Lumber company. The Bteam Bchooner Noyo is awaiting ber turn to unload 110,000 feet of lumber for the Willamette Lumber company.
