Dear Sir: 1 have been sick nearly two years

Syndicate Keeps Its Promises
NEW YORK, Aug. 20.—The stock
market was remarkably well held toduy In
tbe face of heavy withdrawals of gold
from the sub-treasury for shipment to
Europe $2,850,030 in all being taken out.
This was due to a belief tbat the bond
syndicate would deposit in the sub-treas
ury gold in sufficient amount to keep the
gold reserve above $100,000,000. This con-'
lidence was not misplaced, for beforo tlio
close of business the syndicate had mado
such a deposit. Trading Wis less active
than yesterday and although American
tobacco was prominent in the transac
tions, it caused less excitement than yes
terday. Tbe stock was in good buying
demand, making a gain from last night of
4 per cent. The preferred shares fell off 1
per cent to 105, but were bid for at 100
at the close. Sugar developed pronounc
ed weakne-ss early on large offerings by a
hear operator and broke 1% per cent.
Tho general list receded a small fraction
In sympathy but before 11 o'clock helped
by the strength displayed by the coal
shares, a well distributed rise was effect
ed, ranging up to P K per cent, the latter

and prices broke 14 to '1% per cent, which
was later nearly recovered under the lead

Bonds were animated, sales aggregat

Yesterday's weakness broagbt free liqui

lower. The fear of impending deliveries
in the northwest was also a depressing
influence, and with tho absenco of local

and was largely responsible for the de

wore not so large as yesterday and the
grading continues poor. The local re
