REAL ESTATE AND BUILDING
Permits Issued From the
Superintendent's Office
THE LIST GROWS LARGER
Tbe Capitalist Who Builds for Rent
Gets to Work
Somewhat Increased Activity in Dealings In
City Lots and Country binds—Re
ports oi Sal.s ."lale
For six seeks past, more or less, building !
operations have been confined almost ex- j
clusively to the erection of small homes,
Msd as no mure than the usual number of I
buildings of this class has been put up, the
lists have been short. The alarmist has
insisted that :lio lack of activity was
caused by the fact that the city is already i
over-built and the staunch believer in a ]
great future for l.os Angeles is inclined to j
believe that holiday festivities and rainy
weather had put a temporary quietus <>n I
building operations. The list of permits
ItsHSd for the week ended last night iudi" j
cates that other reasons ruust be assigned, j
for general business is no better, There ia ■
no special increase in the demand for
houses, and no growth of population be- .
yond that which lias prevailed with great j
steadiness for a year pas:. Yet in the face I
of these facts the number of permits is- :
sued jumps from forty to sixty, and the in
crease is made up altogether of houses
owned by capitalists and intended for oc
cupancy by people other than the owners.
There may be other reasons, but th*
chief one lies in the fact that ttie city and
county assessments of taxes are made of
projpajrty owned ou the Ist day of March,
and lumber ou ttie ground is very much
more easily discoverable than money in
the pocket, anil consequently the thrifty
builder of Ileuses for rent Kept the money
in his pocket until after the day of assess
ment, thereafter proceeding numerously to
present himself at tbe office of the super
intendent of buildings as an applicant for
a building permit. The accuracy of this
opinion is emphasized by the fact that
the number of modest dwellings built for
their owners* occupancy ia not largely in
creased, and the number of flats and tene
ments built by prudent capitalists who in
cline;, to be economical about paying taxes
is doubled or qu .drupled.
The list of permits issued during the

AMONU THE DEALERS
Co-iditlon ot the Market—Reports of Sales
Made
There is no great change in the condition
of the realty market from that prevailing
for some weeks past, yet there is a general
tendency to improvement, both in city and
county lands. In the ci>y the demand is
chiefly for building lots for immediate im
provement, there being apparently little
inquiry and no deals reported for tracts for
subdivision.
In the country the timely rain and the
good prices prevailing for oranges have
stimulated the market and numerous sales
are reported, the majority being of lands ill
bearing or at least partly improved, with
alfalfa lands making a good second. The
largest deal in prospect is that afTecting
a change of title to the big Ciiino ranch, it
having been given out that Messrs. Easton &
Eldridge have rustled up an English syndi

be made that the lauds have been sold and

Lively Fijht Betwse.i a Couple of Wheelmen
on Sprlnz Street
| People in tha vicinity of Spring and Sec
i ond streets last evening about 6*30 oclock
I were treated to one of the prettiest little
"scraps" ever seen outside of a prize ring.
At the time and place named a couple of
wheelmen came in collision just in front
of Tufts-Lyons' store. One was a big man,
while the other was considerably under the
i average size Tiie little fellow was gama,
{ and as soon as lie picked himself up he
i went for the big man in a manner that
5 called fortli enthusiastic applause, Ap
; parently before the big man knew what the
i troulile was about his wiry little antagonist
i bad landed half a dozen blows in bis face.
I The street was li4led witli people, and a
■ crowd quickly gathered about the lighters.
Bud lenly theory was raised that the police
j were coming, but before tiiey could make
j their way through the crowd the men
, stopped fighting, and mounting their wheels
1 made their escape. No arrests were made,
I nor could the names of the fighters be
learned.

Travelers
Heinricli yon Oeratel, tiie courageous ex
plorer of the interior of the New Hebrides
and New Guinea, while smoking iiis after
breakfast cigar, said in reference to the
latter country, that its interior was ono
mass of lava and upheaved granite, and
utterly devoid of the slightest trace of any
precious metals. The country is very thin
ly populated, notwithstanding the fact
that water is abundant, as are also deli
ciously flavored strawberries and other
small fruits. The natives are very thy,
and communication with them very diffi
cult, but Yon Geistel was able to collect a
great crowd, after a liberal distribution of
candy of which they ere passionately fond.
They are monogamous, and the females
are not permitted to do any work beyond
the care of the offspring and attendance
upon the sick. Jhe nursing mothers carry
their children on their backs and suckle
them by throwing their milky breasts over
their shoulders or under their anus at their
pleasure. Both sexes are entirely nude,
the females having for a covering beautiful
long, black, curly hair reaching to the an
kles, which is carefully washed and dressed
with a sweet smelling oil obtained from an
annual not unlike the violet. When the
mother is tired of carrying the child the
father does duty by placing it
in a sitting posture on his buttock
Which extends nearly a foot outwards from
the spinal column, and is a marked peculi
arity of the I'apue.n race. Their only j
weapons appear to he stor.e hatchets.
They mostly dwell in caves, either natural
or excavated by themselves iv the dry j
season. When the wet season sets i
iv they betake themselves to tiie
trees, building rude huts in them
of withes, intertwined with the
branches, thatched witli dried mud and
reached by slender, springy ladders. lit
the great central plateaus which are
reached by a very gradual ascent from the
river levels, the solitude, the awful still
ness, unbroken by song of bird or cry of
animal is awful.
Lumber dealers seem to imagine that Los
Angeles is a safe asylum. Tiie latest ref
ugee is Allien E. Stlverthorne, of Chicago,
who was at a well known hotel yesterday,
said a detective from the windy city last
night. He disappeared about the lirst of
January, owing about $150,000. The
warrant for his arrest is issued
upon complaint of Brewer &
Land, extensive dealers in lumber at
I 'ninth, Minn., and the Shores Lumber
Company of Ashland, Wis., who are cretl
itors for about $30,000, equally divided.
A charge is marie against Stlverthorne of
making false representations regarding
his tinancial ability, for fraudulent pur
poses.
Hon. Francis of the English foreign of
fice said to Tub Herald's representative
that the publication of the parliamentary
blue-book giving such impartial details of
the boundary question between Venezuela
and British Guiana would do much to re
move the prevalent opinion that llieat
Britain was attempting to coerce an insig
nificant but respeetetl republic. President
Cleveland's action and that of the senate
was not to be censured, as they led to inves
tigation*by which her majesty's govern
ment had obtained much valuable infor
mation whicli would be a benefit not only
to it, but to that of the L'nited States. The
probability of a readjustment of the
llreibund on ing to the disastrous rlefeat of
tiie Italian troops in Abyssinia is occupy
ing the attention of leading European
diplomats. It is not improbable that Eng
land.Germany and Belgium will if it he nec
essary, order their troops (now within tol
erably easy m*rch of Adorra) to join those
of Italy and to teaeli King Menelek a
severe lesson. Private cipher dispatches
to the Italian legation at Washington de
scribe the slaughter of the Italians as
being terrific and that close upon
12,000 men were put hors dv combat.
The wounded were treated barbarously by
the victors. There is no doubt but that
Italy has bean more hardly hit by the de
feat of General Baratieri in a financial
sense, than in the number of her slain
soldiers, but the great tinancial centers of
Europe have already so many millions at
stake iv investments made in prosperous
colonies adjacent to the Abyssinian terri
tory, that if it should lie needed, Italy
would have no difficulty in raising a loan
at 1 per cent.

rightly directed. There is comfort in
tho knowledge that so many forms of
sickness are not due to any actual dis
ease, but simply to a constipated 'tradi
tion of the system, which the pleasant

ly removes. That is why it is the only
remedy with millions of families, and is
everywhere esteemed so highly by all
who value good health. Its beneficial
effects are due to the fact, that it is the
one remedy which promotes internal
cleanliness, without debilitating the
organs on which it acts. 11 is therefore
all important, in order to get its bene
ficial effects, to note when you pur
chase, that yon have the genuine article,
which is manufactured by the California
Fig Syrup Co. only, and sold by all rep
utable druggists.
If in the enjoyment of good health,
and the system is regular, then laxa

If afflicted with any actual disease, one
may be commended to the most, skillful
physicians, but if in need of a laxative,
then one should have the best, and with
the well-informed everywhere, Syrup of
Figs blaiiuß highest and is mor.t largely
used and gives most general satisfaction.
