: ;. NEW YORK, Aug.. 7.-Imposlng show of
strength ., resulted from today's trading
In stocks. • A study of the list In detail
reveals , that the market was somewhat
narrow and restricted : in spite of the
general appaarance of strength. The In
ertia'of a.- largo proportion of the rail
road stocks, was a striking feature of
the market, which is only dull, however,
by -considering what was. not done in
trading as well', hs achieved. ■
■The. buying: was caused by a raid upon
specialties In the samo way that the mar
ket was ' affected last week. Tho news
of .the. day, however, was, pretty favor
able in its general tenor and covered crop
conditions and prospects of railroad earn
ings and traffic, demand for anthracite,
large orders for all classes of steel prod
ucts and sustained ease ' In the money
market.' '
Reports were specific of the very large
orders being . placed for Iron and steel
products, some of the mills refusing, it
is said, to consider business excopt for
shipment late in the year or next year,
as they , are already overcrowded with
work.. • . . . .- ...
* .The iron and steel industries gave evi
dence of organized support and moved
as, though a speculative party had em
barked In a campaign for higher prices.
The ' United States Steel stock did not
meet the widest movements, but had
an. : important sentimental , influence . on
the general list. , ■ ■ , . -
.Railroad traffic. ■ officials - were - quite
unanimous in reporting a volume -of traf
fic, which ■ was fast absorbing the great
ly > expanded equipment facilities which
have been added by all the great rail
road systems in the last few months.
Grain has commenced to move freely ex
cept for some backwardness In the corn
movement,^ and orders for. all grades of
merchandise are reported to be on a large
scale, based on the growing conlidence
in the crop out-turns.
' i The grangers were relatively backward
owing to (the comparatively small move
ment of that grain and the critical per
iod yet tq be passed for its maturity. The
action of; the market- was dne In no small
part, however, to the maturing convic
tion that the • country's grain crops are
practically assured and that they will
prove larse. '-.I >
'The southern railroads 1 enjoyed an
other advance in concert without regard
to the .'poorer outlook fop cotton. Sat
urday's, unfavorable bank statement was
the subject of some discussion, but the
sustained- ease of the money market
soothes -air apprehensions based on pos
sible "future developments.! 1 There was
some 'profit' taking late In the day, .but
prices' recovered again and the closing
was strong and quite active.
■< There was a large demand for United
States Steel second Ss. .
• ■ The movement of prices In the general
bond list was slightly irregular, but most
ly strong. Total sales, par value, $4,182,000,
United States bonds were unchanged on
