iNEW .YORK," Aug. 9.-Openlrig prices
on':. the stock- exchange today showed
mixed gains and losses and prices moved
lin • contrary directions in different jparts
of "the- list throughout the day. There
was scarcely a. . time when a consistent
tons was perceptible, so Irregular and
mixed was the movement.
■'i. Here and there, in the list new high
prices were made and an active demand
for on 0 or two of the standard market
leaders relieved the trading from Us ap-
V pearance of being given over, entirely to
the •- less -prominent syeclalties. The
strength . of these ilnfluentlal stocks was
obviously taken advantage of to effect
''sales and of realizing profits at different
. points. /,'i :•» . ■-
- » Some •• of the less conspicuous . stocks,
I recently rushed to a great height, proved
I soft and < made : . wide declines, i The vol
«ume'of dealings -shrunk to some extent
I and there were periods when the dullness
- was more Intense than for a long time,
. but the character of the account was not
-entirely changed. Selling for Inside ac
count was only evidenced as prices were
; bid« up Ito meet' the ideas of holders of
' stocks and it was when bids were with
- drawn and quotations allowed to sag that
the dullness became most profound.
'..The news bearing on values was of the
same general tenor as for some time past
..and served to keep up the spirit of the
industrial conditions which form the un
derlying baßiafor the firm undertone of
the present market. ■■>■■■-.
' i The actual opening of the peace confer
ence at - Portsmouth, N. H., did not
charge the recent prevalent view of that
event in the financial district which imay
bo described as one of. confidence m ulti
ma to. peace, but^with-a conservative re
servation against possible complications.
It. is: the -general feeling, nevertheless,
that a rupture of negotiations and a de
1 termination . to . continue the war would
precipitate a hazardous situation in tho
financial markets. So far as the immedi
ate effect in this market would be con
cerned the determination by the Japanese
government of its disposition of the larce
funds on -deposit here to its credit would
be ' the prime ■ factor. ~ • -
i The expectation that the government

>" its June earnings statement issued yester
day.^Amalgamated Copper was in a dor

responslble yesterday to an additional ad
,vanco in -the "price of copper. . - '~
N Smelting resumed its flight to now high

nouncement to account for it. The r coal

'Uhe slump' ln' National Enameling was
■ easily -explained as the' result of
passing : of its dividend and Corn Pro-

:i a consequence of the internal dissensions

Wheat had a firm undertone through

The bulls gained tome encourngement
from a favorable report ■of damage to
