NEW YORK, Aug. 16.— There was a preponderance of grains again today in the movement of prices on the stock I exchange and the stocks affected had more influence by sympathy on the general list than those which moved yesterday. The market nevertheless continued spotty and uneven and showed moderate Improvement in the volume of trading. -London discounts hardened again to day and buying for the account of that center was not in evidence In the ab sorptive. power of the market. There was a marked decline in animation af ter the working oft of orders accumu lated over night In commission houses. The market then relapsed Into Its pro fessional character and gave evidence of renewed operations by that element to get up prices higher and to serve as sustaining points while similar measures were extended to other por tions of the list. ; The revived and successful specula tion in Reading up to a new record' level had a notable effect In encourag ■! Ing speculative spirits, the prolonged advance in that stock offering room for personal analogy in other stocks all . through the list that present brilliant I hopes to the imagination. j ' News from the crops showed no change in the favorable progress In tho "grain region, with the exception of some professed uneasiness over the ef ;fect on" corn in low temperatures and poslble frosts in the northern portions of the belt. .-.The slump in National Biscuit, which Is supposed to be due to differences of opinion over financial administrations which threaten a rupture, was of a disturbing character but was without effect on the market. The- Corn Products stocks had the benefit of the reported ending of the severe competition In the gluecose market. ' ' The rlso In the Locomotive stocks had a sustaining effect in the railroad equipment group. '■ The large demand for Amalgamated Copper after its prolonged inertia re »moved one of the repressive Influences yon .< the * market but the United States , Steel stocks remained impassive. The ; arguments In favor of low priced ■stocks centered its benefit on Ches- I apeake & Ohio. The market broad - ened materially In the lßte trading and the closing was distinctly strong.
