HANLON-HERRERA
MATCH IS OFF
BURNS AND SULLIVAN WILL
FIGHT OCTOBER 17
HAS HANLON COLD FEET?
McCarey Believes That He Can Get
Eddie and the Mexican Together
'• During the Early Part of
November
By Associated Press.
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 18.— Aurello
Herrera'B proposed match with Eddie
Hanlon at Los Angeles next month has
fallen through, Hanlon failing to come
up with his signature* to the articles.
■ Hanlon' has been accused of chilled
pedal extremities on the Herrera pro
position because he refused to sign
articles with him. while he was prepar
ing for the bout with Fltitgerald. This
stigma was removed after the Fltiger
ald fight, however, when he stated that
he would meet Herrera on any reason
able terms. .
McCarey believes that he can get
Hanlon and Herrera together sometime
In the near future, but, the October 17
date,' which he has been holding for
them, went • to ; -"Twln" Sullivan- and
Tommy Burns yesterday. McCarey re
ceived a telegram from Sullivan dated
at Seattle in which was the statement
that he would be ready to meet Burns
any time during the next month. ' ' . t-
Wlll Bo Better Fight
McCarey at once telegraphed both
Sullivan and Burns that he would put
the match on October 17. Both Sullivan
and Burns answered .that the date
would be agreeable to them. This will
be a better fight than a match between
Hanlon and Herrera and the fans will
not be disappointed at the substitution.
There seems to be little doubt, how
ever, that Hanlon and the Mexican
will come together sometime early in
November. yesterday tele
graphed McCarey stating that he and
Hanlon would sign articles sometime in
the near future and asked for the Octo
ber date. McCarey was compelled to
answer that the date was already taken
by Burns and Sullivan and offered to
put the match on during November.

WALKING CONTESTS MAY
REPLACE DISCUS THROWING
Weight Throwing Event Said to Be
_J4o Real Test of
Strength.
By Associated Press.
NEW YORK, Sept. 18.— Walking con
tests are to be revived here by the Ama
teur Athletic union. There have been
no events of this kind on the cham
pionship program since; 1898. It was
said at that time they were eliminated
to make way for .throwing the discus.
This substitution was! caused by \ the
victory of an American, Robert Garrett
of Princeton, at the first revival <tf the
Olympia games In Greece in 1896.
For awhile | afterward the ; athletes
here were discus mad and the A. A. U.
added It to the program 'at the ' ex
pense of the time honored branch ' of
walking. . It has been found,' according
to local athletes, that discus throwing
Is no rea) test of strength and that
Us expert" handling Is a knack which
many of the best weight throwers have
failed to muster.
Next fall at the Metropolitan and Na
tional conventions steps probably will
be taken to have the walks Inserted in
all the union' programs and the dis
cus may be . dropped.
