NEW YORK, Oct. s.— The call rato
touched the high level of tho year at 8
per cent, and the stock market as a whole
resumed tho appearance of last week.
That Is to say trading became dul^ and
constrained, but tho undertone held firm.
Last week the firmness was generally
attributed to the expectation of an early
easing of tfto especial requirements for
the turn of the quarter, and for large
syndlcato transactions had been made.
In today's market, however, there has
been perceptible growth of opinion that
money rates are likely to be ilrmly held
for some time to como.
In speculative circles, whero the talk
of the return of ease in monoy has dealt
with days heretofore, the allowance for
possible firmness of monoy was extended
to weeks. In this speculative discussion
came more into lino with the prevalent
bank opening, none of which looks for
relaxations In money except with the
passage of weeks and in some cases bank
ers look for months as the period of
duration for higher money rates. In be
half of this opinion bankers assert that
the firm money market in Now York
through tho last quarter of the year is
a perfectly normal condition. The situa
tion this year, it Is pointed out, is calcu
lated to emphasize the condition, rather
than to rellove it. Efforts were made in
speculatlvo quarters, however, to mlti
gato the influence of yesterday's flurry in
money by attributing it to special causes.
The riso today to abovo the rate quoted
yesterday dissipated the effect of this
explanation.. The high rate had the ef
fect, however, of attracting loans from
outside sources and there were largo of
ferings on account of banking institutions
at other points. These funds, however,
were drawn for the most part from depos
its In New York banks. The effect was
the same as the process of transfer of
loans from the New York banks to tho
trust companios, which has been going
on for several weeks, the new loans ne
cessitating to some extent the calling of
old loans by tho Now York banks. Some
of the recent lenders among the trust
companies were reported also to be
amongst those calling loans today.
A riso in New York exchange at Chi
cago was rellectlon of the attraction of
the higher money here. The decline In
foreign exchange was another result.
Largo additional arrivals of gold are
expected in London tomorrow and the
day's decline in sterling rates here leaves
open the question of New York's ability
to secure a portion of this. Discounts
moved upward today in London and Paris
and the extraordinary low proportion of
the reserves reported, by fho Bank of
England gave occasion for surprise that
Iho expected advance in the bank rate
was not made.
The fact that continental exchanges had
continued to move against London In
spite of the week's rise In the open mar
ket discount rates there adds to the puz
zle of the retention of tho present rate.
The continued pressure for funds at
Paris is believed to be due to heavy losses
involved In tho collapse of the summer
speculation In France.
The day's movements In the money
markets and in tho International ex
changes of the world offered no explana
tion for the reported shipment of $4,400.
000 of gold from the Bank of Franco to
London, and the operation was the sub
ject of Interest and surmise in banking
circles. ... ■,
The movement of prices of stocks under
the restraint of the money market was
not important, but the upward tendency
was quite distinct during the latter part
of the day.

ELOPES WITH HER HUSBAND
Clara Kerr, Whom Negro Pugilist
Charges With Robbery, Was Re.
turning Home When Arested
Clara Kerr, whom Jack Johnson, the
negro pugilist, charges with having
robbed him of his diamonds and money,
arrived in Los Angeles yesterday morn
ing from Tucson. Sheriff White went
after her.
It Is alleged by acquaintances of
Johnson that the Kerr woman Is the
wife of a former sparring partner of
the pugilist and that she left her hus
band in the east several weeks ago and
came to Los Angeles with Johnson.
It Is further rumored that the hus
band arrived several days ago and met
his wife and arranged for her to
"elope" with him to Chicago.
Johnson is said to have gone to the
train Sunday to see his old friend start
east, while the woman went to Dolge
vllle to meet the train.
The diamond ring and necklace and
some money, alleged to have been given
her by Johnson, went with her. When
Johnson discovered his loss he re
ported the affair to tho sheriff and
the woman was arrested at Tucson.
There Is 'something peculiar about
the man who takes no Interest In base
ball. He may be a person of superior
lntellleence,— Chjcaeo News
