NKW YORK, Oct. 14.— The bank
statement proved an enigma again to
day, as has come to be expected, owing
to large share in banking operations
by institutions outside the clearing
house, which do not report results to
be included in the bank statement.
The stock market remained so Impas
sive on tho appearance of tho state
ment ihat fluctuations were feeble
with the closing rusy at small, de
clines.
The attendance nt the stork ex
crange was small owing to the largo
number of absentees in attendance at
the' bankers' congress.
The banks showing of a decrease In
loans of $29,156,600 makes a record
with the sole exception of the reduc
tion for the first week of September.
Repayments of temporary borrowings
by the city of Now York with the pro
ceeds of the yearly tax payments figure
in the showing. It iR believed also
that out of town Institutions have
mado loans during tho week in dis
placement of the New York bank
loans.
Loans by lcoal trust companies are
believed to have played a small part
in the. results and tho recent lending
of foreign funds has aloso come to a
Tlie stock market has Indicated some
liquidation during the week, but noth
ing like the figure reported in tho
bank statement.
Preliminary estimates of the cash
change based on figures supplied by
the banks themselves promised an in
crease of about a million dollars while
the bank statement shows an actual
decrease of $2,350,800. No explanation
is offered for the discrepancy except as
it may represent a rectification of tho
previous statements which has shown
unexplained growth of the cash re
serves. . ,
The foreign exchange market was
unusually strong for a Saturday and it
was supposed that some active demand
for bills is due to buying to cover ma
turities of former sterling loans. Other
large maturities of this character will
fall due during the coming week.
Sterling exchange declined at Paris
again and a small parcel of gold was
withdrawn from the Bank of England
for shipment to France. Sterling ex
change reacted slightly at Berlin, but
discounts advanced again at that cen
ter, at Paris and at London. The in
ternational pressure for gold Is shown
tQ be fully maintained by these de
velopments.
