TOURIST INRUSH
UNPRECEDENTED
RAILROADS EXPECT TO BREAK
ALL RECORDS
More Than 20,000 Visitors Have Come
to Lot Angeles During the Week
and Today's Arrivals May Bring
the Total to 25,000
To accommodate the unprecedented
passenger traffic from eastern points,
thn Los Angeles transcontinental lines
are using the system of separate tourist
and haggnge trains, and the end Is
not yet.
From estimates based on the reports
of railway officials it Is certain thqt
not less than 20,000 travelers from eaat
ern polntsi have sot foot In Los Angeles
during the week. Saturday*! record
will probably swell the figured to 25.000.
A total of fifteen trains of 160 cars
swarmed Into the several depots yes
terday and there were lively doings
about those premises In the handling
of passengers and baggage.
The Southern Pacific handled seven
trains of seventy-three cars, the Santn
Fe five trains of sixty rars and the
Salt Lake three trains of fifty cars
during the day and all were loaded to
the guards.
Mountains of Baggage
To handle the mountains of baggage
almost everything on wheels was
pressed Into service and the baggage
men were a tired lot before their tasks
were completed.
At 7 o'clock this morning the Salt
Lake will start Saturday's proceedings
with an Insallment of sixteen carloads
of tourists and the Southern Pacific
and Santa. Fe expect to complete the
week's record with a record brenklng
day on tha last day of the week, when
the time limit upon colonists' tickets
will have almost expired.
TO INCREASE CARRIER FORCE
Postal Department Arranges for More
Frequent Deliveries of Mail and
< . Shorter Routes
Six additional letter carriers will be
appointed before November 6, for the
purpose of relieving the congested con
dition of the postal service In Los An
geles. The districts which will be re
lieved are the territory bounded by
Hoover street, San Marino, Eighth
street and Commonwealth avenue, a
district bounded by West Tenth street,
West Eleventh, Menlo avenue and
Hoover street, territory between West
Sixteenth and West Washington, and
Normandle and Oxford avenues, ex
tending delivery to Santa Barbara and
West Forty-second streets, between
Moneta avenue and Figueroa street.
A carrier wil be assigned to Station
"C" to Increase deliveries in the whole
sale district between Los Angeles
street, Arcadia to Fourth street, from
four to five deliveries a day.
Two carriers will be assigned to Sta
tion Arcade, Increasing deliveries on
East Fifth street from San Pedro to
Arcade depot, and extending- delivery
to East Twenty-first street, Long Beach
avenue to Alameda street, and reliev
ing the congested conditions in the
southeast section of the city. West For
ty-eighth and West Fiftieth streets,
Main street and Moneta avenue, also
South Flower street between Thorpe
and Malcolmson streets.
A carrier will be assigned to increase
deliveries in Garvanza from one to two
and to perfect the present delivery in
Highland Park.
An allowance of $1200 has been made
for the purpose of affording relief to
carrier districts during the heavy tour
ist season, and give the proper number
of deliveries.
MEXICANS ARE ACCUSED
Cenon Garcia and Wife Blame Their
Fellow Countrymen for Injuries
and Have Warrants Issued
Complaints charging assault with a
deadly weapon were Issued yesterday
by District Attorney John North
against Carlos Clneros, Marcus Cine
ros, Patricio Esplnosa and Gregorlo
Gulterrez, who were arrested by Dep
uty Sheriff Bert Franklin and Detec
tive Talamantes at Larma station
Thursday night.
The complaints were sworn to by
Cenon Garcia and Clofe Garcia, his
wife.
According to the statements of the
Garclas, members of the Mexican col
ony at Larma engaged In a grand
spree Thursday night which resulted
In a free for all fight. In the usual
manner, knives were used, and when
the smoke of battle settled, Garcia was
minus a nose and Mrs. Garcia was se
riously Injured.
It Is alleged that, the men under ar
rest did the stabbing.
MISCHIEVOUS BOYS LECTURED
Justice Young Reprimands Seven Lads
for Hallowe'en Pranks That Might
Have Resulted Seriously
Seven boys charged with soaping the
tracks of the Los Angles Pacific rail
road llnf> near Colegrovp. on Hallowe'en
night were severely reprimanded by
Justice Young yesterday morning and
were then sent home.
The boys admitted having soaped the
tracks, but. asserted that it was sim
ply a Hallowe'en prank and that no
damage was intended. Although noth
ing wad said about the affair, It was
generally understood by the court that
these pamo boys were implicated In
another Hallowe'en prank Tuesday
night when Deputy Constable Jack
Adams was rolled down the Colegrovß
hill.
All the boys left the court room cry
ing, and from the looks bestowed upon
the youngsters by their fond parents
the lads will gpend an unpleasant week.
LOOKS BAD FOR WHALERS
Captain Jarvls Declares That It Will
Be Almost Impossible to
Aid Them

SEATTLE. Nov. 3.— Capt. 0. H. Jar
vis, who commanded the relief expedi
tion sent out by the United States gov
ernment In 1897 to aid the stricken
whalers, stated yesterday that if the
whaling fleet now ire-hound In the Arc
tic was far eastward of Point Barrow It
would be almost Impossible for a relief
expedition to afford them any material
aid as the difficulties of Arctio trawl
In the -winter were such that it would
be almost impossible to take sufficient
food to aid so many men. Capt. Jarvls
states, however, that If the men can
reach Point Jim-row there is hope that
with the aid of the natives they may be
able to survive the winter. .
-('apt. Jarvis Is still hopeful, however,
that the fleet will escape before the
severe freeieup of the winter.

The Mayor and Council of the City
of Los Angeles to ordain as follows:
Section 1. That it Is the intention of
the Council of the City of Los Angeles
to establish the grade of
FIFTY-SEVENTH STREET,
from Figueroa street to tho west city
boundary, In sccordance with the fol-
lowing elevations:
At the Intersection with Figueroa
street the grade shall be 147.93 at tho
northweet corner and 147.72 at the
southwest corner.
At the Intersection with the west city
boundary the grade shall be 147.30 on
the north side and 147.10 on the south
side.
And at all points between said desig-
nated points the grade shall be estab-
lished so as to conform to a straight
line drawn between said designated
points.
Elevations refer to the top of the
curb, are in feet and are above a piano
which is 256 feet below City datum

At the intersection with Walrath
Btreet the grade shall be 164.17 at the
northwest corner, 164.22 at the north-
east corner, 163.92 at the southwest
corner and 164.00 at the southeast
corner.
At the intersection with South Park
avenue tho grade shall be 165.11 at the
northwest corner and 164.86 at the
southwebt corner, as now established
on South Park avenue.
And at all points between Bald desig-
nated points tbe grade shall be estab-
lished so as to conform to a straight
line drawn between said designated
points.
Elevations refer to the top of the
curb, are In feet, and are above a. plane
which la 255 feet below City datura
plane.
Bee. 2. The City Clerk Bhall certify
to the passage of this Ordtnance and
shall cause the same to be published
for ten days In the Los Angeles Her-
ald, and thereupon and thereafter It
shall take effect and be In force.
