RANCHERS TO ENJOY HOLIDAY Cattle Stealing Case Will Not Be Called During Christmas Week The ranchers and cattlemen of the Antelope valley will be allowed to enjoy their Christmas holiday In peace. When the case of Russel B. Burns, charged with cattle stealing, was called before Judge Smith in department 1 of the superior court yesterday morning It was proposed to set the case for trial during the week of the Christmas holi days. When this proposition was made At torney Jud Rush, representing the de fendant, told the court that he did not think it would be wise to hear the case at that time. "I have represented, these people before," said the attorney, and when that case Is heard every man In the Antelope valley will be here, and If It Is to be heard during the Christmas holidays it will be very hard to get any witnesses." The court took into consideration the fact that the ranchers might enjoy their Christmas holiday unmolested whether the court subpoenaed them or not and the case was get down for hearing in January. Burns, the defendant, is alleged to have stolen several head of cattle from the ranch of the cattle queen, Mrs. Belle Smith. The hides of the animals will be produced In court and the brands will be examined. SHERIFF IS SHOT BY HUNTER Will White Injured Accidentally While After Birds Near Im perial As a result of an accident during a quail hunt Sunday, Sheriff Will White of Lob Angeles la nursing a sore face while physicians of the Imperial neigh borhood are richer by several dollars, the reward for a delicate operation performed on the sheriff's countenance. White and a friend were trying to scare up the birds In the brush near Imperial, when, according to White's statement, his friend fired at a bird, flushed toward the sheriff. Several pellets struck the sheriff in the face, two entered his nose, two his right cheek and one hit) forehead. The in juries were attended at Imperial and the sheriff returned to Los Angeles. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to excavate, dig, bore or otherwise construct, any tun- nel under the surface of any of the streets or alleys ln the City of Los Angoles with- out first obtaining permission therefor from the City Council! Before any such permit shall be granted the applicant shall flle with the City Engineer of said City of Los Angeles a diagram and plnn of such tunnel showing Its proposed sit- uation, together with specifications set- ting forth the distance from the proposed tunnel of all water mains and pipes, gas mains and pipes, seweis, conduits for electric wires and railroad tracks, and plainly Indicating In detail the proposed method of conatruction of tho tunnel and the purpose for which such tunnel is to be constructed. Sec. 2.
