By Associated Press. NKW YORK. Deo. 6.— Tho conspicu ous feature of the stock market today continued to be tho greut variety of different Issues in which business wan recorded, rather tlinn the great bulk, of tho aggregate transactions. Advances at special points also wero moro not able than the upward movement In cen tral. There worn many prominent market leaders, in fuet, which moved narrowly all day, and in which the volume of dealings was rather below than above the normal. Nevertheless, the speculative spirit was very much alive and diligent in mHklnff ventures, upon even the slightest suggestions calculated to direct it. There were oc casional pauses in the violent advanc ing tendency which were pretty closely coincident with tho advances in tho call money rate. The fluctuations in the money rate, seemed to have the effect of calling operations until the lato flight to 25 per cent weakened tho whole market. There was no evidence of any enforced liquidation caused by extensive calling of loans and shifting of accounts. - It seemed to be tho determination of speculative operators to pay tho rates for money demanded and to await the clearing up of the money outlook with out saci'lnclng their holdings. It was obvious that steady realizing had been conducted throughout at some very Important points in tho market. This was especially true of Union Pa cific, which was steadily fed to the market at an advance over last night and which made the highest price of the day immediately after tho opening. There was the same tendency mani fested in United States Steel stocks and Reading also showed the effect of a similar process. Added to this was tho effect of profit-taking in some of tho specialties, which have risen most vio lently on the recent trading- Vague rumors of mergers continued a large- Influence in this class or the speculation. National Lead, the South ern Iron storks and the junior Vunder bilts were all subjects of such rumors, none of which was new in any particu lar. The relapse in TiCart was especially violent, and New York, Chicago & St. Tjouls, which ngain led the Vanderbilt movement, lost all of Its sensational gain on the reaction. The declaration of only tho regular dividend on American Smelting- de prived that stock of one causo of stimu lation in the rumors of a proposed in ctease in the dividend. Tho Gould group of railroads were distinctly strong- In sympathy with one nnother. Tho Mat of substantial lead ers which shared in the day's advances was small, however. Amalgamated Copper had tho ad vantage of another udvancn In tho price of copper. The-pressure to realize in creased considerably in the stock mar ket- toward the end of tho day and carried up a point under last night and many other prominent stocks a frac tion. The closing tone was weak. Bonds were irregular. Total Bales, par value, $2,460,000. TT. s. bonds were all unchanged on call. New York Stocks I By Associated Press. NEW YORK.
