NEW YORK. Nov. 27. — The stock
market gave substantial evidence of
strength today, the preference of buyers
turning more to the high priced divi
dend paying stocks.
The rumors of accumulations of Mis
souri Kansas & Texas shares In the
lnterestI Interest of Great Northern control con
- tinued to have force In the speculation.
But the most potent factor In the
greater stronfeth of the market was
Union Pacific annual report. The accu
racy of the forecast of the main facts
of the report made It evident that ac
cess had been had to It by those who
havn been operating in the stock. The
I limitation of the actual Income appli
cable to dividends both from operation
and from other Income, Including the
Southern Pacifies to below 15 per cent,
contrasted with recent claims that a
showing of at least 20 per cent would be
made.
Selling pf the stock this week was
based on a fear that unloading would
follow the publication of the showing.
The support accorded the stock today
consequently found a short interest un
covered and this helped to advance the
. price. An Important feature of the re
port was the light It threw upon the re
maining holdings of Northern Pacific
and Great Northern preferred and Ore-
Ron Short Line treasury. Inferences
drawn from the preceding annual re
port of the amount of these holdings
which had already been marketed
seemed to be disproved by this year's
report which showed that 100,000 shares
of . Northern Securities holdings were
exchanged after the compilation of the
former report.
The amount of new Great Northern
preferred stock subscribed for under
the offer to stockholders was equal to
the full proportion of the entire holding
acquired from the distribution of North
ern Securities assets. Account was
also taken of the fact that only that
of the yearly dividend on Southern Pa
cific was Included in the statement of
'the other Income.
The retirement of the convertible
r>onds releases a large amount of assets
to the treasury and income from the
t proceeds of securities holdings during
the year are to be reckoned in addition.
The buying of Union Pacific was on
an impressive scale and a sympathetic
effect was produced on the whole mar
ket. Evidence of support in the outside
market for the Great Northern ore
t rights removed one cause of yester
day's heavy tone.
The approach of the Thanksgiving
holiday to be followed closely by the
December payments had some repressive
'■fleet on the market. December pay
ments are unusually large this year, es
timates of dividend and Interest pay
ments running as high as $70,000,000.
From December 17 to 26 must be paid
subscriptions to the New York Central
stock which call tor nearly $30,000,000.
the. rights of subscription expiring on
Friday this week.
There was some realizing on the day's
advance but the closing tone was gen
erally firm.
Bonds were steady. Total sales, par
value. $2,446,000.
