12 FINANCIAL-COMMERCIAL LOWEST LEVEL IS HIT ON EXCHANGE PRICES FORCED TO BOTTOM FIGURE SINCE AUGUST DANKS BELIEVED TO BE HARSH ON POOL STOCKS Increased Faith That Supreme Court Will Leave Executive No Alter. native but Action Against Trade Monopolies [Associated Press] NEW YORK, Jan. 26.—The drastic ?!c;iik!stior. wfcir.h --as renewed !n th« stock market today forced prices to the lowest level since the crest of the spec ulative wave was touched last August. Declines over night, ran between five and seven points In most of the active issues with, however, some conspicu ous exceptions. Instances were found in the Hill Pa cifies and the eastern trunk lines, in which stocks had been persistently marketed In the period preceding the present session of urgent pressure. The burden of discussion in stock market quarters was the danger of collision of corporations with the law and activi ties of the government. The attention paid to the subject In the dispatches from Waihlngton aggra vated the apprehension which began to grow acute yesterday. It was not until the statement on the subject made by President Taft was published that the pangs of the market were at all assuaged. There was much confusion of cause and effect in the hurly burly of the market. There was evidence, for in stance, that the banks were engaged in cleaning up the credit accounts and were discriminating with severity against such stocks as justified sus picions of pool manipulation. The overhauling of loan accou»?B by the banks had its incentive in part from the apprehensions aroused by the treatment of corporations by the law as well us by the criticisms of the purely speculative position in the mar ket. The substantial ground for anx- Jety that has grown up in the financial community is the increasing belief that the supreme court will uphold the gov ernment in the American Tobacco case smd leave the executive officers of the government no alternative but to pro ceed against combinations of corpora tions. Consideration of the expected divi dend action on United States steel practically dripped out of sight and the stock market closed with prices near the lowest. Bonds were weak. Total sales, par value, $5,153,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. NEW YORK STOCKS Special service to The Herald by J. C. New York stock exchange ami Ban Francisco bond and stock exchange, 212 West Fifth street, Los Angeles. CHICAGO, Jan. 25.—Wheat suffered a de cline of l^i for May and 1% for other months during the severe period of liquidation early, but recovered later to above yesterday's clos ing price. The pressure was in a measure re newed on the bulge, but there was a very Uu» contingent that oversold on the early decline that took the offerings on the swell. The feeling of unrest engendered by yesterday's slump was responsible for much of the early selUns. It was disclosed on the decline that the floating supply had been very well ab sorbed, and second consideration of the weak iiesa in the stock market showed that losses were not remarkable or particularly Import ant General news of the day was for tnu most part bearish, but It was given little thought because of the more immediate pres sure of offerings from frightened longs and reckless and aggressive shorts. Corn suffered with other grains from the severe early liquidation, but rallied sharply later. An immense Quantity of long corn In the aggregate was bought on the slump and much of it went Into new Investors' hands, as well as to sMorts. The market appears to have been very largely stripped of weak holdings at the present. As in wheat and oats, short selling was overdone on the slump and the smaller shorts covered at the close. Larger grain concerns reported large purchases of cash corn in the country today and shellers generally busy. Oats followed other grains. A large quan tity of miscellaneous long oats went overboard on the early weakness. The market then ad vanced rapidly to a little above yesterday's close. . Provisions, as pn yesterday s opening, tlie operMng today disclosed an avalanche of sell- Ing orders, executod on wide fluctuations. The decline saw reckless short selling, quiet ab sorption of product on a very large scale by Bhorts and packers on the slump, and later a very substantial rally. Market Ranges WHEAT— Open. High.
