AFFECTATIONS OF
ACCENT ABSURDITY
Michigan Professor Makes Ob
servations During Afternoon
Tea of Girl Students
TYPE OF TALK IS A "POSER"
Says Young Women Try to Com
bine Pronunciations of Their
Acquaintances
ANN ARBOR, June 25.—1t was
no less an authority than a professor
in Michigan university who declared
not long ago that he was "alck of af
fectation In pronunciation." one of the
bfst loved mon in tlio great school, ho
ii;is seen thousands upon thousands ol
mon ami women go out from his clasg
os in the course of his long academic
career, says the Detroit Free Press, "in
mj early day, when i was a yotlng in
structor, affected speech, f\m among
young ladles, was rare, he told some
ol his students,
"Then came a wave of it thai swept
ail over and reminded mo of those silly
foppish French <iays of the 'Precleuse«
Ridicules,' Immortalised by Mollere,
when the bourgeois element btgan to
put on airs that sot the whole world
a-laughlng. Now a good pronunciation
is to be cultivated, Just.as pretty mod
ulations of the voice are much to be
desired both in mon and women, but
when it i miles to these obviously
strained-after apings of somebody
else's English, 1 think it is time to
show people how utterly ludicrous they
appear,
"The fact is, in some forceful slang
that appeals to me very much for its
torse power of descriptions, these poo
pie dun't get away with their airs—not
one bit. Not long ago my aversion for
this sort of thing got the better of my
discretion and of my good manners, I
fear, at a charity afternoon tea.
'Well, there were a lot of Detroit
girls among them, and as I stood off
lor a while listening to them, 1 mar
veled where they had acquired their
.-.nils. Certainly they didn't sound
like Michigan, nor like anything within
many miles of the middle west. To tell
you the truth, I couldn't make out
what they did sound like and I've done
;i liit of traveling in this and other
countries In my day. Hut this type of
talk was a poser for me,
"Thi'tv wen- a number of broad as—
gome of them quite the broadest I had
ever heard, There were few t't except
wht'ii now and thru someone less alert
than her sisters let drop a n"'"i healthy
one, At last one ot the prettiest of
them, a slender, sweet eyed young
thing, that might have been a Rosaetti
model, fell t:i my lot, I never hoard
such talk. She was mighty nice tv me,
too, getting the choicest little rakes for
me and some very fragrant tea in a
pretty cup, and fixoil to suit :\ King.
Hut her accent! 'You're a Michigan
girl? 1 I asked. 'Oh, yes, indeed,' she
beamed, 'Fathah awnd grawnfathah
were bawn hoali.' 'But you haven't
lived here much?' I ventured. '<3h, yes,
only a couple of yeahs that I was cast
at school. 1
"So there it was; two years owst at
school had done the mischief, she met
a lot of New Yorkers and southerners
and no doubt some English people
there, and bo she tried to tix up a little
more elegant accent for herself, with
the distressing result. There Is no such
pronunciation in all the English lan
guagej as 'awnd' for 'and,' nor navvnd'
toi hand.' If a child is sent away in
its earliest youth it can naturally ac
quire the accent of fts new environ
ment, but when it comes to a grown
Michigan girl in a couple of years get
ting an entirely new version of mother
English, it does scorn a little miracu
lous —don't you think?"
AXLE GREASE A TIDBIT
AMONG THE EGYPTIANS
When railroads first ran in Egypt 8
curious problem presented itself in the
form of a disappearing dietary lubri

there was somewhere a constant leflfc
In the axle grease department, arid,
an Investigation being made, it was
discovered that the native employes
were secretly purloining and eating for

prolonged discussion over tho matter,
the railroad officials compounded the
grease by adding castor oil to it, thus
leading the practical Egyptians from

AERIAL DRIVING IS
LATEST SENSATION
Daring Drivers of Air Craft Take
Chances Answering the
Plaudits of Crowds
ONLY DARING MAKE ATTEMPTS
Descents Often Made at Speed
Approaching 100 Miles
an Hour
LONDON, June, 25.—A supreme at
traction has been discovered for this
Bummer's Hying meetings—the "vol
plane," or aerial dive. Mounting to a
great height, an airman'shuts oft the
Ignition of his engine, thus robbing
himself of all motive power, points
his elevating piano earthwards and
comes diving down at a speed ap
proaching 100 miles an hour.
To the spectators It appears as
though he were dropping sheer to de
struction, but Just before he reaches
the ground ho rights his machine dex
terously, and manages to alight safe
ly. Such* Judgment and nerve does the
Feat require that only one or two of
the most famous airmen have as yet
attempted it—notably Paulham, Efl
moff and Captain Bertram Dickaon,
the Englishman who defeated all for
eign rivals at the recent Tours meet
ilig.
"So fascinating is the trick to spec
tators. " explained Captain Dickson,
'that I am now being, offered large
sums (it money to perform it in addi
tion to comaetlng In the ordinary way
at the flying meetings. At Tours, peo
ple came again and again in the hope
of seeing a "vol plane." The sensa
tion in doing the trick is extraordin
ary. The wholo art of it is to keep
control of your machine by descending
swiftly. After you have cut off your
engine, were vnu to go straight on
through the air the aeroplane would
gradually slow down until it began to
drop, backwards. . This would mean
coi tain death, of course,
."What you have to do l« to •sum
mon up sufficient nerve to throw your
leaver forward and turn your machine
as though yon uvtv falling to the
ground. You find yourself, as tho
aeroplane dips over, looking straight
down at the ncrrmromc Below you.
Then the earth seems to rise up as
though it were going to hit you. You
fi el as if you were descending in the
fastest lift ever hntlt.
'The critical moment cornea whi>n
you have to alter the angle of your
elevator, check your spec'!, and nt
the same time preserve sufficient mo
mentum to glide safely to tho ground.
The feat is the must sensational yet
devised .'"r any exhibition of ilight."
