LOCAL MATTERS. The Fourth Volume.--New Title.
A'ilh this number we enter upon the
jurlh volume of our ptptr . For three yesrs,
tn the face ol many difficulties end discour
ifements, we here tucceeded in furnishing
out pitrom with, at least,' tolerable degree
of regularity, an out and out Republican pa
per. Ana we nave to ssytnstin aomgiim,
we have had lo rely on our own resources
lone, having had to bear, perionally, all the
lotiet incident to the probationary period ol
political paper, in aection in which
there wai auch an oddl agsinst tl.e party
whoie principle it especially advocated.
True, we were kindly favored by per ion 1
friend in Pindlay, with the loan of few
hundred dollar, at moderate rate of inter
eat, but have never received one dollar of a
gratuity, from any one. Blnce, therefore,
the Republican of thia County, have pa
pet established on a firm basis, without hav
ing had to run any risk themselves, or suf
fer any pecuniary sacrifice, we feel that it
would be but an act of simple justice on
'their port, to make an earnest effort to pro

'There haa never been period in our histo
ry, as nation, when the influence of the
press waa more needed to guard our liber
ties and promote the principles of sound
morality. Error never enlisted more deter
mined devotees never before, in so short a
time, made such rapid strides in the work of
aggression. Every frieud of free institu
tions and liberal principles, has a duty to
perform, which can be discharged in no
way more effectually, than in laboring to
give greater'efficiency to the press. Will

We have enlarged our paper considerably,
in order to have more spice for reading mat
ter. Thie has been attended with addition
al expense to us, which nothing but a large
ly increased circulation will justify. We
will have to rely on the generoua co-opera-j
tion of our friends, in securing us the means
of continuing oit piper in Its present size.
The title we have adopted, we consider
more in conformity with the position weoc-)
cupy on questions of a political character.
When we first established our paper in this
county, parties had become ao completely
revolutionized that it was difficult to deter
mine whsi position would he finally taken
We. therefore, thought it prudent not to
identify our paper with any party; hence,
the titlewe assumed. The formation of the,'
Republican party, subsequently, having in
view the propagation of principles essential
ly Republican, met our entire approbation,
mid we thcrelurc gave it our hearty support,
as we intend to do in future, aa long as it
preserves its integrity.
Wehaveoutstanding, several hundred doi-
lars yet, on subscription, which remained
unpaid when we adopted the cash system.'
A number of our old subscribers owe usj
their entire sulxcriptions, from the com-'
inineemenlof the first volume up to the 1st'
uf January last. We have been to the ex-.j
pm.ieof sending s collector around once, '
mid since, been to the trouble of sending
them their accounts, yet we have not heard'
from them in any shape. We need this,
money very much, to meet claims that we
owe, and cannot, therefore, indulge those
who are indebted to us any longer. They

of wool, as some others, yet our farmers np I

and the business of wool growing will be
