From April, 1SC1, until the close of the war she was actively engaged on the field and in the hospitals. A certain lady, who is not unknown In Philadelphia society, has been twice a widow, but is now the- pride of a third husband. The lady alludes to her husbands as her "first," "former" and 'present." She often relates pleasant memories of husband 1 and 2. The latter she describes as a man who always endeavored to appear perfectly cool and collected on every occasion. One sum mer they were staying at a hotel and were aroused in the middle of the night by an alarm of fire. The flames were burning fiercely, but the husband calmly said to his wife: "Dress carefully, my dear, Just as much as if you were preparing for a balL" Well, they finally left the room and got out on the lawn in safety, with their portman teaus even rescued.
