THEIK FIRST APPEARANCE
3heBtarqua dts Play Music A Small
Hall and a Big Audience
Mr Prank L Hooga is to bo com
plimented on the musical treat
which he scoured to the public last
night It is a pity that Honolulu
cannot now boast of a bigger hall
than the one offered bj the Y M
O A In days gone by Mr Hoogs
would hav been able to fill the
Opora House for several nights by
offering to the public such music as
is rondorei by the iMarquariU com
pany
Mrs Marquardt plays the harp
in a manner which cannot be ex
celled The writer of this report
has heard Langstadt and other fa
mouB harpists but it is Bafo to say
that the touch of Mrs Marquardt
anything before heard on
that magnificent instrument It is
unnecessary to slate that Mrs Mar
quardt was most enthusiastically re
ceived by the audionce proont
To fill out the ovening Mrs Mar
quardt had called in several friends
of the amateur class who all pro
duced a little music which was re
ceived in a good nnturod manner by
the audience Professor Rudolph
J Horold who resembles our Os
car did considerably fine work on
tho magnificent v Schiller piano
which was lent for the occasion by
the Hawaiian News Company Mr
Marquardt worked with energy on
tho violin and Miss Richards sang
a Lullaby without fault Mr Rloh
ardx tho principal of
sahools and an export base
ball man took some innings on the
piano and got home in good
Hhape
Thoro wore about 850 poople pre
sent and tho usual choice display of
flowers and applause abounded
Tho concert to night should be well
patronized as tho playing of Mrs
Marquardt in worth more than all

OABEY AT 1 HE BAT
It looked extremely roky for tho
Bostoii nine that day j
ino stortt srooti two io iour wiin
but an i ailing left to play
So when tunny died at second
and Burrows did the same
A pallor wreathed the features of
- the patrons of the game
A straggling few got up to go leav
ing there the rest
With that hope which springs eter
nal within the human breast
For they thought If only Casey
could get a whack at that
Theyd put u p even money nowwith
Casey at the bat
i
But Flynn preceded Casey and like
wise no did Blake
Aud the former was n puddV and
tho latter was a fake
Soon that8triokonmultitude a death
like silence sat
For there seemed but little chanco
of Casoys getting to the bat
But Flynn let drive a single to
the wonderment of all
And the much despised Bakey tore
the covei off the ball
And whon tin dint had lifted and
thoy saw whot had occurred
There was Blakey safe at second
aud Fly tin a huggin third
Then from tho gladdened multitude
went up a joyous yell
It rumbled in the mountain tops it
rattled in tbti dell
It struck upon the hillside and re
bounded on the flat
For Casey mighty Casey was ad
vancing to the bat
There was ease in Caseys manner as
he stepped into his place
There waB prido in Casevs bearing
aud a smile on Caseys face
Aud when responding to tho cheers
he lightly doffed his hat
No stranger to tho crowd could
doubj twaB Casey at tho bat
Ten thousand eyes were on him as
he rubbed his bauds with dirt
Five thousaud tongues applauded
whon he wiped them on his
shirt
Then when the writhing pitcher
ground the ball into his hip
Defiance glanoed in Csoys oye a
sneer curled Caseys lip
And now the leather covered sphere
onmo hurtling through the nir
An Caoy stood a watohiu it in
haughty graudeur there
Close by the sturdy batsman the
ball unheeded sped
That aint my style said Casey
Strike one the umpire said
From tho bench black with peo
ple there went up a mullled
roar
Liko tho beating of storm waves on
tho stern and distant shore
Ol him I kill the umpirel shouted
Borne one on tho stand
And its likely theyd have killed
him had uot Casey raised his
baud
With a smile of Christian charity
great Caseyn visage shone
He stilled the rising tumult he
made the game go on
He signalled to tho pitcher and
once more tho spheroid flow
But Casey still ignored ir and tho
umpiro said Strike two
Fraud 1 cried the maddened thou
sands and tho echo answered
Fraud I
But one scornful look from Casey
and tho audionco was awed
Thoy saw his foce grow stern and
cold they saw his muscles
strain
And thoy knew that Casey wouldnt
let tho ball go by again
The sneer is gone from Cosoyd lips
his teeth are clonohed m hate
He pounds with cruel vengeance his
bat upon th plate1
And now the pitcher holds the ball
and now ho lets it go
And now tho nir is shattered by tho
force of Caseys blow
Oh somewhoro in this favored land
the sun is shining bright
Tho band is playing somewhere and
somewhoro hearts are light
And somewhoro in on are laughing
and somowhero children shout
But there is no joy in Bonn town
mighty Casoy has struck out
