Rov 1ather Yorlio Makes a Bplrlted
Reply to tho Hev J M Alexander
Tho following is tho second part
of tho Rov Father P 0 Yorkos lot
tor on tho missionaries of Hawaii in
roply to J M Alexander
July 17 1800
Dear Sir lu ray lotter 1 showed
that tho missionaries to Hawaii far
from having to combat idolatry
found idolatry destroyed on their
arrival that far from addrossing
thotnsnlvoslo tho pooplo thoy de
voted thomsolvos to acquiring powor
over the chiefs that through tho
chiefs thoy dragoouod tho pooplo
into a semblanco of Christianity
and that was tho consequent demor
alization that tho entrance of teach
ers of another faith was domandod
not only by considerations of roli
gion but by tho dictates of common
humanity
In this lottor I intend to pursue
this subject further I wish to show
what Jarves hirnsolf says of tho mis
sionary operations and what nou
Oatholio travellers havo to tostify of
tlioir results If I appear to bo too
prolix Mr Alexander is to blarno
Ho has accused mo of defaming good
and noble men I merely desire to
show your readers how noblo they
really wore and how good
Christianity is a religion of indi
vidualism It appeals to each one
personally Wo havo each of us to
work out his own salvation We
cannot bo sayod on masso Tho mis
sionaries to Hawaii did not appear
to recognizo this truism Or if thoy
did recognize it it was too troublo
somo to tackle each kanakas soul
by itself Hoce thoy adopted tho
plan of securing tho chiefs and
through tho chiefs forcing tho na
tives to conform to Christianity
Any ono acquainted with the human
nature knows what is the natural
result of such a system Says Mr
Mauley Hopkins tho Hawaiian
in his history which
by tho way is dedicated to that
champion of No Popory Lord John
Russoll and is adorned with a laud
atory preface by tho Protostaut
Bishop of Oxford
Tho missionaries clothed and con
verted tho natives and they pro
duced not alas a regenerated peo
ple but a nation of hypocrites
Mr Jarves admits tho truth of
this charge and indood seems to
glory in it forgetful of tho word
Woo unto you soribes and Phari
sees hypocrites bocauso yo com
pass land and sea to mako ono prose
lyte and ho is made yo mako him
tho child of hell twofold moro than
yourselves Hero aro his words
Thoro i3 but little doubt that al
though a majority of tho couverted
natives do not conform strictly to
their vows yet in consequeuco of
them they aro a bettor people
Perhaps thoy may bo a bettor
poople according to the standard
of Now England but cortainly not
according to tho staudnrdof Christ
Jarves considers it a great advaueo
that among tho converts
Vice is condemned and virtue ap
plauded Man of course aro to be
found moro fond of a good name
thau of tho moans necessary for its
attainment Publicly they aro ono
boing privately another Tho very
fact of tho nocossity of the decep
tion shows a groat advancomont in
moral sentimont
What aro to think of mon who
raised hypocrisy to tho rank of
moral sentiment and considered
that thoy worn a succoss as mission
aries when tho uativos had folt tho
nocossity of being ono thing in pub
lic and another in privalo But tho
phenomenon is not now It foil
uudor the observation of our Lord
1900 years ago aud this was His
opinion of it
Woo unto you scribes aud Phar
isees hypoorites bocauso yo aro liko
unto whited sepulchres which ap
pear unto mon outwardly beautiful
but withiu aro full of dead mens
bones and all rottenness So ye also
appear unto men outwardly indood
beautiful but within yo aro fillod
with hypocrisy and all iniquity
THE TESTIMONY OP TACTS
But lest Mr Alexandormay acouso
mo of merely throwing mud let mo
appeal to tho facts Ho may quote
his bolovetl Jarves boast
In no placo ha3 tho triumph of
tho Cross been moro signal than at
tho Hawaiian Islands p 113 and
again on pago 112
Without exaggeration tho nation
may now bo said to havo boon
Christianized that is thoir faith
was fixed in Jehovah nud tho prin
ciples of tho levoalod gospol woro
thoir professod guido
But tho samo Jarves informs us
how much all these boasts aro
worth As long as tho bluo laws ro
mainod in force tho uativos woro by
fines and imprisonment compelled
to liston to tho preaohors but a clay
came whon the bluo laws woro sus
pended After the death of Knahu
manu tho political power of the
preaohors waned for a soason and
tho downtrodden natives Chris
tianized and all a3 thoy were took
things into their own hands Says
Jarves
Tho scone that followed beggars
description Some remained faith
ful to their instructions and had tho
amount of missionary good boon
confined to theso few their labors
would have been amply repaid
Tho worst scones wore onactod at
Honolulu but a general civil aud
moral anarchy prevailed throughout
the group Schools woro deserted
teachers rolapsod congregations
woro thinned excosses abounded
and in some places especially in the
Distriot of Hilo Hawaii idolatrous
worship was again performed
Sevoral churchoB were burnod and
some livos lost Groggories woro
opened and distilleries sot in motion
Tho wild orgies of hoathouism rolled
ovor the land
What follows cannot bo told Yet
this was the Christian pooplo who
were protected by tho preachers
against the Popo ofRome
Mauloy Hopkins quoted above
corroborates Jarves p 221
The pooplo galled with too sovore
a curb on their habits and inclina
tions broko looso iu debauohery aud
every sort of vice Moral anarchy
prcvriWl not only Honolulu but
throughout tho group Schools
were deserted tho toachors them
selves falling away buildings for
worship wore buruod Tho dark
habits of heathonism sprang up
again like tho hoads of Medusa and
in ono district at least of Hawaii
idolatrous worship was performod
If wo may givo full orodouco to ac
counts which como to us through
tho missionary party the islands
must have boon for a timo a pan
demonium
Yot all this timo tho preaohors
woro roporting regularly homo that
thoir succoss was complete
But it moy be urged that tho
dozen years which had elapsed were
not sufficient to havo Christianized
the natives Let us go on as many
yoars moro Mr Molvllc an Amer
ican relates what happened during
the rule of Lord George Paulot
who iu 1813 released tho natives
for a short period from tho thral
dom of tho missionaries
Who that happened to be iu Ho
nolulu during these teu momorablo
days will ovor forgot them I Tho
history of those ton days reveals in
their truo colors tho charaoter of
the Sandwich Islanders aud furnish
es an eloquent commentary on tho
rosults which havo llowod from tho
labors of the missionaries Freed
from all restraints of sevoro penal
laws tho natives plunged voluntarily
into ovory species of wiokodnoss and
oxcess aud by thoir ultor disregard
of all deconoy plainly showod thai
although thoy had boon schooled
into a Booming submission to tho
now order of things thoy were iu
reality as depraved aud vicious as
ovor
