Ed. The Independent: In tho facet of tho lotter calling attention of tho O. R. & L. Co. to thnir flagrant and continued disregard of the laws of their charter, and in the face of the fact that injury has been done lo life and limb of passengers in tho accident of the 2nd inBt., tho same method of action is oontinued. I cite tho following instances: Saturday, Sept. lth, at 1:15 train, box car behind passenger oafs for Waianae. Saturday, Sept. -If h, at 5:10 p. m. train for Waianae, tho air brake on last passonger oar would not work, and had to bo disconnected at Saturday, Sept. itb, at G p. m. train from Waianao, fully loaded, had behind the passenger cars, no loss than 11 freight cars (4 box cars, 1 open dump, and G flat cars); and to any ono who has tho slightest knowlodgo of making up a train and of the state of tho road and rail?, this is simply criminal and would subject any company or its employees to severe punishment. Tho Sunday train duo in Honolulu, at 6 p. m. full of passengers had the last two passenger ears entirely disconnected from the air brakes. Is the company so euro of its political pull that it can afford to say with the noted "American," the "public be d dJ" In conclusion, allow me personally and in behalf of other travellers, to thank you for your able editorial on the subject, and tho chance of ventilating a grievous wrong that for some reason the other papers have failod to comment upon. Yours respectfully, TRAVELLER, Tho Hawaiian 8onato. Tho Hawaiian Senate, or department of registration and ratification for President Dole's decrees, is composed as follows: FIRST DISTRICT, HAWAII. In Germany just now they are ex periencing another attack of Samoan fever. One of the chief organs of ,tho Colonial party makes an attack' on Mr. Osborne, American Consul at Apia, saying that he is an unscrupulous man who regards all means as justifiable, and thereupon appeals to the Government to act more resolutely to protect German interests in Samoa. Another journal goes further and declares tho only way to protect German interests is to annex the islands. It says the opportunity for annexation is favorable, in view of America's takiug Hawaii nud Groat Britain claiming Tonga Island. Irish World. A FUNNY LETTER. E ery family in tho city -which numbers among its members juveniles who bcllevo impllcity in Snntu Claus, will appreciate this letter by n llttlo tot who 1ms just mastered the art of printing out her letters. "Doro Santa Claws: "Qho mo u dol with red shos, a stov and n dol buggy and sum candy and a now brother niul two bottles of Rainier Here," When ashed why sho wanted Santa Clnus to givo hor two bottles of Rainier Beer, the llttlo writer replied: "Dccauso pupa nnd mama sny it Is the nicest beer mntle." Crltorlon Saloon, phone 783, Unicorn Uniform Tho little Hawaiian Poodle Who dotes on his dear Uncle Sam Frisks to tho tuno Yankee Doodle Whilo barking at naughty Japan. But the little Hawaiian Poodle Who wanted a gay uniform Forgot all about Yankee Doodle, Preferring, you know, English form. Ho wantod some Jubileo breeches, And God knows what kind of a vest All ombroidered with Prince of Wales stitches And a coat like tho sun in the woBt. So eager for gay decoration Was this foolish and silly canine, Ho forgot all about annexation, On his longing for clothing carmine. He thought a bona fine sample From tho portion of olotbos in the rear For what ho deserved would bo ample To rendor his judgomout more clear. The Lion's rod coat tails wore flying, Caressed by tho evening breeze, Which our bold little poodle espying Concluded he'd capturo with oaje. A snip and the coat tails wore his'u. And the Lion got along noli without. They aetod on the puppy like pizou For ho never had oared for ragout. The 2d of September, the birthday of Liliuokalaui, was observed as a holiday at tho Lepor Settlement on Molokai. Bright and early did the unfortunate inmates of the Settlement turn out and all thoroughly enjoyed the jollification of the fostive occasion. Aftor prayers for the Queen in tho chapels, the day was spout in viewing regattas, horse races, aqua tic and athletic sports. An apple contest created much merriment. Refreshments were served during tho day and the bands discoursed pleasant music. It is touching to learn that these 1500 Hawaiians, in spite of their sufferings and terrible ailliotions have preservod intact their loyalty to their aliis, and their aloha for their country.
