Tho season of baseball, Inst Saturday, after lying dormant for tbo throe proceeding Saturdays on account of various othor events, principally aquatic, happening upon the days sshoduled for basoball, was the occasion of bringing teams from the St. Louis and Star clubs together in ono of tho contests of the now nearly finished sories of games for the championship pennant. Only a small audience was present to witness the game and the paucity in numbers was undoubtedly due to the lack of proper advertising. Those present, however, felt satisfied as long as tho St. Louis team was "up" that the game would bo one for "blood," and patiently waited during the space of twenty miuutos after the set time for the appearance of an official umpire. Necessity compelled the choico of umpires ueiug made from the spectators present and Messrs W. H. Cornwall, Jr., and Prince Kalauiauaole kindly placed their services in tho at the disposed of tho players The Stars went first to bat and Irishman, by a fumble of Willis, got first, but got caught napping on second and retired. Tho next two' strikers for the Star, Hart and Wilder, Bhowed that they were playing without their heads for each had three balls and no strikes yet tho fourth ball pitched instead of being waited for was struck at by each player, hit oasy to Thompson, and both out at first. The St. Lou'ib loam finished the last half of the first by playing the lirat tallies on tho score board and to Lheir credit. Willis and Lemon scoring. From the 1st to the 3rd innings tho Stars placed cyphers to their credit (or tho St. Louis team also adding two "nothings." In tho 3rd Hart hit hard by short got first and stole socond. Wilder flew out to Simorson, Mahuka oasy to Gleasou who, under a temporary aberation of mind induced by tho silver touguo of Thompson, instead of throwing to first, held the ball and gave Ma huka a life, Mahuka stole second while Pahau hit low to Willis at first who erred by not holding his base but, instead, threw to Dayton who fumbled and Hart oame home, Pahau getting first. Pryce hit several fouls then a hot linor to Thompson whoso hands nud head both camo into play he stepping to second and easily retiring Mahuka. One tally for tho Stars- and the ouly oue they saw placed to their credit from thence to the 9th. The St. Louis boys woro living on tho "sunny side of Easy street" with regard to tho plays in the game, long fly to left or center were caught and fielded in in time to catch Star players in double plays and whon Lemon was pitohing wild Star batsmen would as previously said, help him out with a moan littlo bit to in-Gold or outfield and loso their life. In the 4th Qloason made a contor tionist catch which oaused him to fall baokward heavily but he hold tho ball. He received well desorved applause. At tho bat tho St. Louis team wero also in luck. Iu tho dth when two mon woro out Thompson got a lucky hit and sent two men home and on the 5th after two men were out and Clarke on a good hit only reachod 1st, Hansman got hit by pitehor and a passed ball advanced tho two runners to second and third. Holt then steps in and by a hard hit to right sent both home and to third, ho coming iu later on a passed ball, Iu the 5th Thompson used his hoadpiooe again and got base on balls, Gleason sending him home a littlo lator. Willis and Gleason woro both sent in by a protty hit of Lemon's to center. In the 8th Gloasou got a ruunorahip by a hard hit to couter aud Clark soon aftor hit to the satno spot and sent him homo. Everything was dark for tho Stars when thny faced Lotnou in tho 9th oven tho brilliant Lionel who had been retired for Babbitt feoling Ronr at tho prospocts. Tho clouds dropped hoavy tears upon the victors and the almost vanquished and the gamo wont on, It was a rally but there was tnuoh joy in it for the Stars and their friends. Tho rain made tho ball and grounds both greasy and tho frantic efforts, at times, made by the St, LouiB boys to stop and field the ball, was conducive to hilarity iu the backers of either sido. Five runs tho Stars piled up and then rotirod, tho St. Louis victor by a score of 11 to 6., Following is tho scoro by innings: ' sconE nr innings. 123 15678 9 Stars 0 0010000 5- G St. Louis 2 0 0 2 3 3 0 1 Timo of game, 1 hour 40 minutos.
