Yestorday aflernoon about half-past 2 o'dlook, Mr. Akiyama, of I'.io Foreign Oflicp, attempted to commit suioido by harakiri at his rosidouco at Shiba, -Tokyo. It appears that ho returned to Ii'ib homo about 2 o'clock and telling his mother that ho had left the office earlier than usual on account of his feeling unwoll. Mr. Akiyama retired to his room and went on bod. Half an hour later when a maid sorvant ontored his room ho waR found lying prostrate in a pool of blood with a sword in his right hand. On an alarm being givon Dr. Aaada, living in tho neighborhood, was immediately sont for aud he arrivod to tho houso without dolay. On examination it was discovered that there were two wounds one in the throat and the other in the abdomen. Tho former was about two inches long aud ' of an inch deep and the latter eight inches long and two inches deep. Mr. Akiyama was in a very weak condition but his reasoning faculties were all right. The mother asked for the motive of his rash act but he rofused to discloso it and begged her not to seud for more dootors. Subsequently Dr. Sysaki and Surgeon Koudo of the Imperial University, arrivod and the wounds wore attended to. The wound in the abdomen is said to have taken fifty stitches in tho surgical operation. After the treatment the patient has been unablo to talk, and is in a state of unconsciousness. Tho doctors believe that the patient will recover if no othor troubles were supervene. In the throat tho windpipe was entirely cut but as the artery was not touched it did not prove fatal. As to tho cause which led Mr. Akiyama to commit attempted felo de se nothing is known as so far no paper, bearing relation to it wasfouud. It will be remembered he was sont to Hawaii by the Government when tho trouble botweon Japan and Hawaii occurred and remained thero for some time assisting Minister Shimamura in tho negotiations with the Republican Government. Whon it was almost decided to entrust tho dispute to the arbitration of a third party Mr. Akiyama left Honolulu by the steamer Gaelia on tho 21th of July, and returned to Japan. Since thou he is stated to have always been buried in sombre meditation and apparently brooding over some un pleasant situation, From the reports thus far published his deed hardly seems as the outcome of insanity and there must bo something at tho bottom of this sad affair. Many people naturally think that his recent mission to Hawaii was in somo respects the cause of tho tragogy , Japan Mail. Tho Yellow and White- Kacos Tho confederation or alliance of tho y olio w raco against tho of tho whito peoples, is an idoa which finds favor with a certain class of writers in Japan, and whioh wo havo always regarded as being in tho highest degreo unpractical and pernicious. Wo aro glad to observe that the same opinion on this mischievous doctrino is hold by tho Our contemporary justly remarks that, if this dream of a yellow confederation is to bo carried out, Japan must he prepared to face tho antagonism of tho whole civilized world. Tho countries of tho yollow raco, besides Japau, are limitod to Korea, China, and Siam. Supposing, what is almost impossible, that theso countries oan bo brought into firm union undor a treaty of olToneivo and alliauce, is thero anybody bold enough to think that thoy havo the strength to hold their own against tho poople of the white raco? Tho idea is, as our contemporary implies, simply absurd. Tho admits that raco prejudico constitutes one of tho most potent factors that inovo tho world, as is conspicuously ovidenced by tho attitude of tho Europoan Powers towards Turkey. But our contemporary asks its oountrymeu to roiled and consider calmly whether it would not be highly injurious to thoir country's interest to coll this dangorous motive forco of international action into play. Japan, observes that journal, has a duly to perform toward tho othor yolldw nations of the Far East, and that !h to lead thein along the path of modern civiliza tiou. But all the notion of uniting them for tho purpose of checking the progress of Western- nations, has to bo abandoned once for all, for tho only cousoquenco of such an idea will be serious injury to Japan's interests as a mombor of tho family of civilized nations. It is of urgont importance that theso things should bo rightly understood by our countrymen, for, as the Kokumin no-Tom observes truly, thoro already exists in tho West a strong anti-Japanese feeling, which it should bo our earnest endeavor to remove as far as possible iustoad of encouraging by extravagant and impossible notices of an combination of tho yellow raco. In order to avert the dangers lying Japan's path, it is of paramount importance to us to roly on the principles of justice and humanity. The worst enemies of Japan ore those who try lo encourage the feeling of race prejudico against the civilized nations into whose community wohavojusl onterod.
