amateur race, open to all amateurs

a boys' race, open to boys
from 1-1 to 17 yoars of ago. Tho
final ovont of tho afternoon will bo
au exhibition one-third of a mile,
flying start, by Charles Murray.
While there will bo no competitors
in this race, it will be au extremely
interest i6g one from tho fact that
the ridor will establish an amateur
record for the track, which will be
contested later by riders of tho Fame
class, who feol that they nan tie, if
not lower, the recod made by Murray.
The events for tho evening will bo
a mile novice; a handicap,
professional; a two-mile amateur
handicap; a taudem race,
aud an exhibition one-third mile by
George Augue. This race will establish
a professional record for tho
above mentioned distance, and will
bo pacod by professional men, either
on a tandem or a triplet.,

Mr. James is au experienced hotel
man who during his services as chief
steward of the Australia ban gained
innumerable frionda in the Hawaiian
Islands, as well as among the
travelling publio of tho United
Tho new, company has left the
full mauagemont of the Hotel to
Mr. Jameo, and has approved of hia
plans of improvement, which eventually
will secure to the islands a
Buperb tropical hotel. Mr. James
has already imported two experienced
chefs for the kitchen which by
tho way is to bo Sfobuilt aud thoroughly
modernised. As soon as tho
busy travelling season is ovor, tho
principal alterations and additions
to tho old building will be commenced.
Under the forraar management a
very small scope was fallowed for improvement
as the owners of tho
lease did not feel justified in expending
much money on the property
then belonging to the Government
nnd the disposition of which,
after tho expiration of the lease was
Mr. F. Lucas .who has managed
tho Hotel in a vory able manner will
have charge of the bar, whioh will
be conduoted in an up-to-date manner,
and where he will be welcomed
by hia many friends.
The community is to be congratulated

will be able to boast shortly of
a hotel which can compare favorably
with the best appointed in the
