Tho Hawaiian Islands
mOM AN OCOAHIONAt CORRESPONDENT
The political destiny of tho Ha
waiian Islands whoso geographical
importance iu the Pacific Ocean can
hardly bo ovor ostimated canuot fail
to bo interesting to tho student of
contemporary history Hawaii has
not inaptly been designated the
Gibraltar of tho Pacific If wo take
a chart of that ocean and draw a
straight line from Sau Francisco to
Hongkong we shall find that it
passHR through tho Hawaiian group
Draw another lino from Victoria
British Columbia to Sydney Aus
tralia and it jntorseet tho Hawai
ian Islands Again draw a straight
Hue from the Nicaragua Canal to
China and ii will traverse the Ha
waiian Archipelago These linos re
present a fast developing commerce
and thus with the United StateB
Canada and South America on the
east China and Japan on tho west
and our great Australasian posseB
sion on the south Honolulu has be
come a busy port of call the im
portance and usefulness of which
will be considerably enhanced when
tho projected cable between Van
couver and Australia has been com
pleted and the Nicaragua Canal
the construction of which is now
seriouslv jontomplated with the aid
of the Government of the United
States is finished The Hawaiian
Islands will then lie directly in tho
track of corameroe betweon tho
Eastern and Western Hemispheres
and the populous countries washed
by the waters of the Pacific Ocean
Already tho steamers of some six
or seven great Bteaniship lines make
Honolulu their regular port of call
Its harbour affords easy access and
complete shelter to vessels of the
largest tonnago without tidal draw
back or detention and the port is
busy with tho trafllu created by the
enormous exports of sugar rice
coffee fruit and othor products
which these fertile islands produce
in great abundance The export of
sugar nlnne which now amounts to
nearly 200000 tons per annum gives
o iiploytueut to a large fleet of sail
ing voxels aud steamers aud finds a
convenient and profitable market at
San Francisco a trade iu whioh
Canada begins to participate now
that a regular steamship service is
established between the two coun
tries
Tho questionable means by which
the- Hawaiian Monarchy was swopt
a vay four -years ago aud tho injustice
done to Queen Liliuokalani aud her
acknowledged successor the Prin
cess Kaiulaui form a political ob
ject lesion Now that the annex
ation of those islands by the United
States has again become an active
political factor it deserves to bo re
called Ou January 17 1803 a haud
ful of Americans aud Hawaiiaus of
American descent formed a Pro
visional Government and demanded
he abdication of the Queon This
extraordinary movement could not
possibly have succeeded but for the
active sympathy aud support of the
vliuiiter Plenipotentiary of tho
United States who ordered an arm
ed force to be landed from an Am
erican war vessel ostensibly for tho
purpose of protectiug the lives aud
property of American citizens The
native population was overawed by
the display of foreign forces and
the Queen iu order to avoid the
tbedding of blood aud under a pro
mise by one of tho leaders of the
revolution that her oaso should be
referred to Washington submitted
to tho abdication forced upon her
though not without a dignified pro
test The Provisional Government
under tho protection of American
troops immediately took possession
of tho palaoo and publio buildings
and pro port j hoisted the United
States flag on tho Government
buildings and promptly despatohod
