Hawakden May 18 William E
Gladstone died at 5 oclock this
morning Mr Gladstone had been
unconscious practically all day
though at times hesoemod to rscog
nize for a moment somo of the
watchers about him Certainly he
did not recognize hiB wife who was
besido him all day except when the
physician prevailed upon her to rest
She tonderly clasped her husbands
hand as she watched him Apparent
ly he slept a good deal occasionally
he uttered a fow words in an in
coherent dreamy wayj words which
those who were watohing were un
able to catch Their only consola
tion was that he was not suffering
No narcotics were administered
Though a national funeral will
probably be acoepted by the family
thoro is little doubt that the romains
of Mr Gladstone will be laid to rest
m
the peaceful graveyard at
Hawarden adjoining the church
where he was married more than
half a coutury ago
London May 19 Every other
topia in Great Britain dropped out
of sight before the passing of Mr
Gladstone In two places perhaps
was tho tonBiou most keen and
heartfelt the House of Commons
and Hawarden
Just before tho House rose yes
terday a telegram from Mr Herbert
Gladstone reaohod Lord Stanley an
nouncing that his father was sinking
Already before his death the
hush of grief seemed to fall over tho
seene of his triumphB and from the
presont men turned to the paBt re
calling sayings and doings A great
lion lay dying his old colleagues
his one time enomies and followers
watohing his last long fight with his
last and implacable foe as they
watched in past days his fight
against foos whom he could over
oomo Truo to himself he was
yielding slowly inoh by inch It
was generally felt at St Stophens
that his dying was but the sequel
to that groat soeno witnessed four
years ago wtiou nis last speoon
epokon ho quitted the Houso with
out one word of spoken adieu
Anticipating tho inevitable tho
members of the Government dis
cussed the appropriate procedure
to bo observed and resolved that no
effort on their part should bo want
ing to mark a suitable sonso of thoir
loss
Disregarding recent precedents
it was decided that the program
in Parliament should be tho same
as that adopted in tho cases of tho
Earl of Chatham and of theyouugor
Pitt namely an address to Hor
Majosty praying for a fuileral at
the publio charge and n monument
Greeted in Westminster Abbey
Throughout tho whole kingdom
J every pubno gatuoiiug aaaea its
words of grief to tho volumo of na
tional mourning clearly voicod in
tho telegram from the Prince of
Wales to Mr Horbert Gladstone
My thoughts are with you your
niothor and your family at this try
ing time you aro experiencing Ged
grant that your fatlior doos not
suffer Auuwt Edwako
At the banquet of tho Homo
Counties Liberal Federation last
evoning Sir William Vernon Har
oourt Liberal leader in tho Houso
of Commons instoad uf delivering
an important party attack only
uttered n fow words of grief and
loft tho room Tho Duko of Devon
shire Lord Prosidont of the Council
of Ministers speaking before tho
British Empire League referred
touohingly to the mourning scones
at Hawarden where tho gruatoBt of
Englishmen wan slowly passing
aWay
In other placeB Lord Horatio
Davis Lord George Hamilton tho
Secretary of Stato for India Henry
Carapboll Bannorman and ninny
others in Loudon as well as in
Birmingham Swansea Cardiff
Liverpool Edinburgh and elsewhere
at all sorts of gatherings politician
divines agitators reformers and
women joined in the expression of
national and individual grief while
tho press without exception pub
lished columns of detail and col
umns of editorial comments
It wan the topic of the hour in
Gruat Britain but abroad tho evi
dences of sympathy woro almost as
universal M Faure President of
tho Frenoh republic received every
bulletin Tho press of Belgium
Franco Italy and Greoco in a
spontaneous outburst recalled how
many oppressed people during Mr
Gladstones life havo offered hymns
of praise for his intervention in
their behalf while in Madrid even
the prospect of his doath has caused
a twenty four hour suspension of
war animosity against Englnnd
Not tho least point in this tribute
to Mr Gladstone was its profound
unanimity
The Hawaiian Outlook
Sugar trust advices from Hawaii
aro that the Dole Cabinet and Legis
lature do not approve the text of
tho annexation bill a copy of which
was forwardod from Washington to
Honolulu somo weeks ago and that
the measure as it reads would not
be ratified We are uninformed
about tho ground of Hawaiian ob
jections it is not revealed as yet te
tho island publio but they probab
ly relate to somo phase of tho labor
question It seems to bo tho hope
of the sugar trust that those differ
ences will prove irreconcilable and
that Hawaii by its own act if not by
ours will be kept out of the Union
It is overlooked however that the
annexation bill is no longer on tho
calendar of Congrosv but has beeu
supplanted by tho Newlauda resolu
tion which presumably avoids the
objeotionablo featuros of tho earlier
measure That the resolution is
satisfactory may be inferred from
tho faat that Minister Hatah doos
not oppose it It is going steadily
ou stage by stage to tho Presidents
desk Favorablo report having boon
given by the House Committee on
Foreign Affairs the next step will bu
passage by tho Houeo itself touch
ing which thero is no uncertainty
Tho clotost friends uf Speaker Rood
inoluding Leader Dingloy assort
that he will interpose no obstacle
That the resolution will bo accepta
ble to Hawaii wo havo un doubt for
the islanders assuming that thoir
sources of prosperity aro not to bo
dammed up aro more strenuous for
protoctiou against foreign attaok
and domoitio violnnco than they are
for any other ono thing aF Chron
