Tho Definition of a Story
Do you know the technical mean
ing of tho word story as under
stood in newspaper ciroleR It is
tho art of weaving a fow sparse facts
into a column or two of attractive
matter and whore the usiful pictur
esquu description aile then imagi
nation has to Bte in This latter
gift of the gods I lave good reason
to rememhor in many ways As an
artist in tho company of a gifted
and rising youugl novelist- I had
occasion to viBit the ec one of h rath
er mysterious mdrder Tho result
appeared in tho paper next day in
the Bhapo of beautiful novelette It
was full of facts Hint did uot bear
on the ease prettily assisted by de
scriptions of the suirounding scen
ery and furthermore relieved with
theories that svormod -their way in
sinuatingly round tho story in the
most approved newspaper fasbiou
the account closing in a rather sud
den manner with a vagui hint that
a man with red whisker- was re
sponsible for the dire deed By
some freak of nature there wore
only three men with red hair that
resided in that particular district
for miles round and they all
promptly threatened tho proprietor
with libel Tho affair was further
aggravated by a contemporary start
a series of articles on lied Hair and
Crime I shall never forget my
second visit to this district a year or
two later whon walking to tho
scene of another tragedy in the
same neighborhood I was quite
alone and was watching the sunset
with great iutereBt when in the mid
dle dietauce I saw a small figure
coming at a half run in my direc
tion Curiosity caused mo to stand
still and watch my tracker but I
shall never forget my feeling when
I saw it had red hair and carried a
gun I wasted no time and hurriod
and as I half ran and walked down
a narrow country lane I heard a
colio voice suddenly exclaimed Oi
be you the newspaper bloke I
looked round and saw a terrible
face of feline aspect wreathed in
blazing rod whiskers glaring at mo
ovor the ledge The hands that be
longed to the face toyed lightly with
a gun This was enough to got on
with and I promptly sat on the
graBS aud blurted out No I am
not The red whiskers ceased from
bristling and a look of disappoint
ment crept over tho cat like face
Oitn sorrow that you beant ho
Me and my brother yon are the only
witnesses and here with morbid
delight ho added aud we smelt
her whon he bo a biliu of her body
aud the rod gentleman with a
proud look disappeared from my
sight for ever behind tho hedge I
may add that the novelist now oc
cupies a comfortable niche in the
temple of fame and furthermore
that his wife has red hair The
