LOOAL AMERIOANIBM
The American pooplo nnd Amor
can Oongresamen do not aeom to be
as muoh impressed with the Ameri
canism of tho pooplo here as our
local annexationists took pains that
thoy should bo before annexation
Hilo Tribune
It is a well known fact that annex
ation waa obtained or rather endea
vored to be obtained by fraudulent
misrepresentation of the views of the
majority of the people here
It neyer would have been attained
by the presumptuous treaty pre
sented by the successful revolution
ary administration of Dole Co It
was obtained through tho war with
Spain making tho Islands a UBoful
military station or point d appuii
for the Uoited States
Tu American element in our
midst is practically composed of self
soekHrs who followed tho raising of
thu flag atid for the present at least
they are in the minority
In course of time when the bene
fits of being a portion of the power
ful country whose flag now flies
over us through a political necessity
and not by our wish is more pro
perly estimated and this becomes a
free commercial country inhabitod
by tho
race instead of by theAsiatio peons
of the planters the reproach of be
ing un American will not be foisted
upon us
It will require time and education
and liberal treatment to make us
forget that we are neither more nor
less than a country annexed by con
quest in spite of tho plausible ex
cuse that our self constituted gov
ernment was a party to the bargain
of sale
It is now too late tot oither party
to that compact to object to its ac
complishment but if tiere is suoh a
thing as political faith and honor
between tho powerful aud the weak
the United States should treat the
treaty tendered by our government
as the basis for our future status
A former sovereign and independent
country is deserving of better treat
ment that a sparsely inhabited and
distant territory
When the project is on foot to
deprive the liberally educated Ha
waiian race of voting representation
in their own country while at the
same time bestowing it upon aliens
who arrived as contract laborers can
it be expected that Hawaiians can
accept Amerioanism as rapidly as
pagan can bo transformed into Chris
tians by the placing on of bands
and the sprinkling of a fow dropa
of water
Not a Jay Town
Tho foreigners who think that
Hawaii is populated by a lot of bar
barians and jays are making a mis
take whether they come from the
Island of Hawaii or from abroad
Yesterday an attempt was made
by a fireman on board the transport
Leolanaw to smuggle about five
pounds of opium ashore The ever
vigilant Customs Inspector Neoley
caught tho sinner and tho dope and
this morning a fine of 250 was im
posed by the District Magistrate
whp remarked that if the boy had
common sense he would see that
the fine was paid up by the boss
