Boport ol tho Work of tho Honolulu

To the Board of Trustees bf the
Honolulu Eyo and Ear In
firmary
Gentlemen
Tho Honolulu Eyo and Ear In
firmary was founded by tho action
and organization of tho Board of
Trustees in Fobruary last and ac
tually opened for tho treatment of
patients on the First of last June
During March April and May I
solicited subsdriptiqus tho resppqse
being gonerout and pncouragingatid
on seeing that a siiffioieuoy of funds
were promised to insure the opening
of the Infirmary I ordered tho equip
ment of instruments etc to furnish
the same Delays in filling tho
orders and in transit of tho goods
occurred so that it was the end of
July before the bulk of them arrived
and I was only then able to finish
fitting up the Infirmary I found
great difficulty in soouring a suitable
location at a rent whioh was within
our means and it was the end of
May nearly boforo I sucoeodod with
the consent of the Trustees in leas
ing rooms on the third floor of the
Model Blook adjoining Progress
Hall a situation in overy way ad
mirably adapted for the purpose
boing centrally located and the
rooms airy and cool In those prem
ises I opened the doors of the Insti
tution on Juun 1st last to patients
and tho Infirmary recdrds kept by
mo Bbow that up to Nov 30th inclu
sive thorn have been admitted to tho
service by free ticket or card sixty
patients Theso cards I have distri
buted from timo to time among the
olorgy of the city the secretaries of
the benevolent societies and tho
associated oharlties as well as some
of theleadingOhinese merchants and
others who assured me they would
investigate the claims of any inquir
ing for treatment to prevent unfair
advantage boing taken of the In
firmary by thoH who wore able to
pay for medical services and so far
I can state that none but suitable
oases have been treated in the insti
tution and of tbo sixty patients
the average duration of the treat
ment has beeu about six weeks I
have in faot givon 930Beparnto treat
ments sinao Juno 1st last or an
average of nearly thirteen patients
per diem For the three hospital
days namely Mondays Wednesdays
and Fridays but as I found this was
overorowding me I allowed the pa
tients to come on any of the work
ing days of the week thus making
tho average seven nearly for the six
working days The Infirmary is not
open on Sundays except when the
bods are occupied or in the special
0086 of a patient requiring me to
give him treatment Now among
these patients troated all the na
tionalities found in Honolulu have
been represented but by far the
larger number being Chinese how
ever and I would hero call the at
tention of tho Trustees to tho liber
ality with whioh tho Chinese colony
subscribed towards the expenses for
starting the Infirmary and I have
to particularly thank Mr Ohu Gem
of the firm of Quong Sam Kee
Co for his courtesy and the trouble
he took in introducing mo to the
Ohiueso merchants when I was
soliciting their subscriptions and
for explaining to them the object
for whioh this charity was founded
Almost every form of oye disease
has boon treated during tbo past six
months but especially have I found
tho preyalonoo of lowforms of infla
mation of the cornea of a ohronic
type and slow in yioldipg to treat
ment more particularly noticeable
among those of tbo Chinoso who
from poverty or othor cause have
lived almost exclusively on a rioe
diet
Quite a number of operations have
been performed at tho Infirmary
among them four cataract operations
two iredootomys for tho formation
or artificial pupils six removals of
floshy growths known as pterygiums
and a numbor of minor operations
with one removal of tho oyoball Of
oar cases old standing oases of de
afness and noises in tho oar and
oases of middlo ear supperation or
running oars thero have been quite
a numbor come up for troatmont of
which four aro still under my care
tho others boing discharged ourod
The Infirmary has been equipped
with tho most modorn and improved
instruments and appliances olootri
oal and othor for tho refraction of
the eye or its surgery aB well as the
latest instruments used in treatment
of tho ear nose and throat
Tho vast majority of the troubles
met with in the ear being dirootly
dependent on some morbid condi
tion oxisting in the nose or throat
and I can assure tho Trustees we aro
as well equipped and provided as
any modern eyo and ear infirmary
need be Also with tho present
equipment we could take care of
twenty beds ns well as the two we
have bhould the requirements of
the oity call for it and our funds
permit it in the future
I find tho average cost of running
por mouth inoluding rent to be
about 112500 but when the beds are
continuously occupied this sum
would bo increased by about 50 00
per month So far 1 have confined
myself to out patient work not feel
ing sure of my funds holding out if
I kept tho beds filled
At the present dato I havo three
Natives four Portuguese eleven
Chinamen and one Russian under
treatment and I feel assured that
theie numbers will be largely in
creased when tho institution become
more generally known
There has been subscribed 2972
60 of whioh 249700 has been col
lected and of this amount I have
expended 197852 on equipment
and after paying ront and running
expenses for tho first six months
there is an available balance in oash
and promised subscriptions of
50518
The Seoretary no doubt will fur
nish tho Trustees with a detailed
statement of receipts and expendi
tures
I have the honor to be Gentle
men
Obediently Yours
