Flans of tho Ocoanic Company Sor
vico to Be IncroriBod Stock
holders In Annual Session
Onq or tho most Important sessions in
tho history of tho Oceanic Steamship
Company was tho nnnunl meeting of
tho stockholders of the company The
reports of tho officers showed that tho
corporation has not only surpassed all
previous records of prosperity during
Its latest year of existence but It prom
ises for the year Just beginning greater
results and success Tho affairs of tho
corporation were briefly summarized In
the report of tho president John D
Spreckels who referred particularly7 to
the substantial results of last year and
to the healthy condition with which
the new year Is begun
Mr Spreckels called attention to tho
success which has greeted tho bonds
which havo been Issued for tho con
struction of new ships These ships
ho reportedwlll Increase the number of
round trips during the year from eight
or nine to seventeen The ships In
speed equipment and comfort will be
without peers In the Pacific Ocean and
will contribute materially to the up
building of the commerce of the coast
There Is the president reported every
reason to expect substantial mail sub
sidies from the Government of New
Zealand As the whole the affairs of
the company could not -be in a better
condition and the future could not
promise a brighter outlook
The total net earnings for 189D were
37471745 an Increase of 4919005
over those of 1898 - In the net earnings
of 1899 the steamship Zealandla con
tributed 95509 35 for her services as
a Government transport Deducting
this amount from the total of net earn
ings leaves as net earnings In the reg
ular trade 279178 40 which is an In
crease of 10140164 or about 63 per
cent over the regular trade earnings
of i898 There is now In tho treasury
the sum of 29654760 as against 222
90132 in 1899 making an increase of
7364628
This sum does not include the money
which has been received from the sale
of bonds These bonds are now very
highly considered by Investors as the
premium upon them demonstrates The
entire authorized amount of 2500000
has been subscribed for at par Bonds
to the extent of 1250000 have been is
sued and partial payments to the
amount of 725534 have been made on
account of steamship construction and
further payments will soon become due
One of the most Important parts of
the presidents report deals with the
construction of these new ships and the
enormous increase of tho service which
will bo of vital Interest to tho com
merce of tho coast The president re
ports that the requirements of the trade
are beyond the present capacity of the
company but it Is fortunate that tho
now ships tho construction of which
was authorized at tho last annual meet
ing will be sufficient to meet the in
creasing demands of tradel The first
of these three ships will be launched in
a few days and will bo able to take up
the running on Julio 13 It will bo fol
lowed two months later by tho second
vessel and four months later by the
third As already indicated they will
be without peer on tho Pacific Ocean
and could not bo duplicated now at an
Increased cost of 25 per cent When
they are put in commission tho Ala
meda and Mariposa will bo withdrawn
In turn to recoivo new boilers machin
ery and other Improvements which
will Increase their speed and capacity
Tho president reported also that ho
had visited Washington in connection
with securing mail subsidies and con
fidently expects increased revenue from
this Bource when tho now steamships
are ready for service Proposals have
been made also to tho Government of
Now Zealand with a view to the estab
lishment of a new subsidy
In addition to tho value of tho fleet
tho assets were Funds on hand In
