The local Census Bureau matters
i
ont by the quarantine eald James
V Qlrvln yesterday Wc are on
that account doing n great amount of
work by mall and receiving answers
testifying to tho -willingness of corre
spondents to give us all assistance In
their power We flrst addressed the
sugar planters sending them a sample
schedule which they will have to fill
by next June in anlwerlng tho census
questions Letters were then sent to
tho1 leading men of the different dis
tricts and their cd operatlon in the
work of the census taking was read
ily secured
There are but five districts in which
provision for the census taking have
not been made We are now ready to
go out and work but are embarrassed
by tho strict bealth regulations The
somi ofliclal report of 44000 people In
Honolulu has changed our calculations
considerably as at the outside we had
estimated about 35000 population In
the Kona district and had figured upon
nineteen men as sufficient to do the
work The town had been carefully
districted and sub divided as it is in
a large district The Kona district ex
tends from near Paul Isenbergs place
at Walalae to Moanalua
The Chinatown fires came and the
population of the thickly settled parts
was distributed around so tbat the
work of mapping out will have to be
partially gone over It has been found
that the Island of Lanal which was
thought to have a population of about
200 souls all told js occupied by some
COO people and tfio work there that
we thought might Ibe done by one man
In a short time will take much longer
to complete Theijlectoral districts as
defined by the code have not been
changed by us but sub dlvlded so In
case wo were called upon to show the
population of any one division it
might be readily done
Mr Merrlam chief of the Census
Bureau has been very kind in render
ing us all necessary aid in our difficul
ty Twice lately we have written en
couraging letters to him of the situa
tion but we seem now to be as much
tied up as over again Our mall by
arrangement with the Government is
all franked In our letters of inquiry
wo enclose a franked envelope for re
ply
Although hampered as regards out
side work tho ofllco of tho local census-takers
is a busy place There are
six sets of blanks to be labeled and
numbered and as the sub divisions of
tho districts aro many the -work is
very tedious and must bo very care
fully done to avoid mistakes
