TOPICS OF THE DAY
Tho uost of a cable from San
Francisco to Honolulu will bo over
53000000 A cablo after all is
cheaper than a plague but then the
cablo doesnt travel on hacks or
with guards etc as does the plague
in Honolulu according to the bills
submitted to tbo Board of Health
There seems at last to be a chanco
for tho construction of a cablo to
tho Orient via Honolulu Hurrah
for tho cable but jyhat are wo going
to telegraph aboufi from thi3 nasy
going country which until further
order or come Ediennian device
must remain about 3000 miles from
the mainland
Tho Seattle people are happy be
cause the Burlington road will run a
solid train from St Louis through
to Seattle The establishment of a
transcontinental lino from Seattle
tho coming city of the Pacific North
west to the leading city of the Mis
sissippi Valley will bo of great im
portance Hero in Honolulu we
want to know whether the now
move will Jiavo any direct influence
on tho price of St Louis and Seattle
beer
The Hilo Herald talks plainly
when it terms the Dole oligarchy a
deal and steal Bet but if dame
rumor speak truly which she seldom
does there have been some curious
goings on within the cabinet cham
ber and the reform legislature will
probably discover some of the se-
crets Until tliosa hopeful days ar
rive Tiie Independent will probably
keep silent as it wishes to retain a
few hot shots ia its locker for elec
tioneering purposes
How many years longer does tho
Board of Health intend to carry on
their sporadic cases game Is there
a real estate syndicate at their back
trying to freeze out property owners
in the burned up districts or is it
intended to spond money until the
first election undor tho new ordor of
affairs in the hope that a certain
clas3 of men may be made their
friends and give them their votes
Their motto may possibly bo make
hay while the sun shines for the
tornado and blizzards aro approach
ing and then tho Eagle will scream
The work of the Census Bureau
will begin shortly and we think that
it is the duty of every1 oitizon to
assist tho superintendent of the im
portant work in every way he may
desire To got a true consus of the
population of theso islands is of
vital importance to al but it is by
no moans an easy task Let our in
telligent people call for the blanks
to be used and explain to their
neighbors who probably do not
know tho importance of the census
the reasons why tho questions of tho
census man should be answered and
how to give the correct answer It
is a very Berinus matter aud as thero
are no politics iu it we hope that
all classes will join in furthering the
object of tho Census Bureau and
giye to the whole world all possible
statistics in connection with our
little spot on the earth
Mr Winston Churchill states there
is abundant proof of the Boers ueing
a large proportion of illegal bullets
no fewer than five different kinds of
exploding or expanding bullets hav
ing been found aud goes on to say
that after making overy allowance it
must be said that they show when
in stress a very dark cruol and
vengeful underside of character
War is warKrueger gave fair notice
that if war occurred ho would make
huraauity shudder in the defence of
his couutrv Roberts and Kitchener
J have been trough such phases of
s
fighting before in many lands and
will probably prove to bo sufficiently
adept to bo able to counteract those
illegal bulletB by diabolical legi
timate inventions more cruol and
disastrous in effect In war tho devil
must bo fought as with fire and not
with milk and water Tho Boers
thought Lyddite unfair but wheu
tho British learn a fow lessons from
American explosives they will bo
wiser
