TRIBUTE TO
HAWAIIS BEADTY
In the Newton Mbbb Journal a
gentleman Geo W Moreo who was
recently hero gives the follow
ing impreioion of Hawaii
The Hawaiian Inlands ore too
beautiful for the npplication of
English adjectives They assume
the usual form of their volcanio
origin mountains with a maximum
of 14000 feet sloping gracefully to
the sea save whsio rcnfato gullies
fissures and crevasses by storm
torrents which generally paBS away
as rapidly as thoy arise They are
clothed to their summits withlperen
nial verduro varying with climate
and altitude from the extremely
tropical to that of the temperate
aono There are many graceful
woterfallB fed from regions of per
petual ice and snow in Maui and
Hawaii wharo the ocaon has con
verted the shoroa into preolpioos on
the windward sides The foot hills
plains and slopes butwoart mountain
and Koa are of great futility most
of tho flora and fuitu of the tropics
and many of the temperate zone
many birds edible salt waterush of
all colors and plonty of them iu
daod the birds of paradise pale in
color before the fish of these isl
ands pheorants quail pigeon and
wild hogs and goato and deer in
plenty for the sportsman a pictur
esque people amid musie and flow
ers no storms and no iee but
perpetual sunshine save the quiet
pasting of the shower which with
ns in soaiion and with them over
makos sweeter the breath of Junes
freBh greenness
It has been my fortune in a life
devoted to travel during all poui
ble leisure many jears of which
have been spent in foreign coun
tries to gaze upon earths choicest
ooeneB I need not speak of Europe
for most know it well enough and
its mountain and lake scenery is so
different that it is not ooraparable
To my mind there is nothing in the
Mediterranean Aegean or Blcol
Seas so oharmins and bsantiful
not even tho Isles of Qreeoe and
tho spring aad winter elimate of all
those seas is cold and damp while
tho extremes of temperature in the
Hawaiian Islands ate 50 to 90 de
grees and either extreme is rare In
phrsieal features Palestine Syria
Asia Minor and the Nile are not
beautiful Sato in the mountains
there is little sosnery in Mexico or
South Amerioa Tho islands of the
Caribbean ArohipelaQ are indeed
bsautiful but the people the de
generacy I tbe filth and diseasel and
when northers strike you there
you can well enough imagine you
are enduriag a nor easter in Boa
ton
In tho Hawaiian Islands wherever
tho winds come from and at what
ever Beason they are as balmy as
those of Ceylon if not as opioy all
searocB are summer and health aud
oleeulineis are the rule there is
little of either the laxity in morals
or iu tbe rules of sanitation here
whioh prevails in so many of the
other island oountries
I came here with a sorious ease of
asthma and bronchitis whioh a stay
in 6sn Francisco had ooly aggravat
ed and it praotioally disappeared iu
a week
From jay windows I see in tha
