The aliove dispatch relates to reinforcements
sent to the island of Marinduque,
where Captain Shields and fifty-one
men of the Twenty-ninth .volunteer
infantry were reported captured by the
insurgents. At that time General Mac-Arthur
sent Colonel Anderson and two
companies of the Thirty-eighth volunteer
infantry with the Yorktown and two
gunboats to tho relief of Shields and hu
command, if they were still alive.
In accordanco with instructions received
from the war department, General
MacArthur has made arrangements for
the prompt transportation from Taku lo
Manila of the United Stale forces at
Tientsin and Peking, not included in the
"legation guard" to be maintained at Pe
king under the personal command of General

LONDON, Oct. 4. The conservatives
held Newcastle by enormously increase!
majorities and Captain Lamden of the
.British cruiser Powerful, upon whom the
liberals counted to deal a crushing blow
to the government, finds himself at th
bottom of the poll.
Tames Laurence Carew has been defeated
in the contest in .the College -Green
division of Dublin, which he represented
in the last parliament, the opposition to
him growing out of the" fact that he attended
a levee of the Duke of York.
Mr. Carew'B friends seized upon the opportunity
of John Howard Parnell,
brother of the late Charles Stuart Parnell,
losing his seat at South Meath, to
put Mr. -Carew forward without his
knowledge for South Meath and, owin'
to a technicality, he was elected without
opposition. Mr. Carew may now reconsider
his offer to resign South Meath in
favor of Parnell. The conservatives
have captured another seat, SunderlamL
from the liberals -
The total number of returns up to date
is 309, as follows: Ministerialists, 220
liberals, 54; nationals, 35. Edwaid
Blake, Irish nationalist, has been returned
unopposed for the south division
of Longford, which he represented in the
last parliament. The conservatives suffered
defeat in the St. Stephens Green
division of Dublin.
