From the Evtminfj llulletln,
George K. Carter makes a serloua error
in refusing to respond to the query on
his interpretation of the municipal plank
in the republican party platform. Mr.
Carter is well aware of the fact that thu
public considers the utterances of ths
Advertiser as a reflection on the opinions
upheld by Mr. .Carter and his particularly
intimate political associate.
The Advertiser interprets the term "vi
soon as 'practicable" in the municipal
plank to mean no pledge whateverof the
party or candidate. It asserts that the
tira for municipal government ia not
now. but "vbentfver the tjnie shall conw;
ia which they (municipal charters)
orght to be accepted." -"
Mr. Carter owes it to the party, ha
owes it to himself to make a plain statement
of his position. Failing in this it
is the duty of the territorial eqmmHt
12 make a statement that shall leavej
u& opportunity for misunderstanding oa
the part of a single voter. The municipal
.plank is not a generality in aay
vnso -of the word, as regards its influence
as -an issue of the campaign. It I
an issue, and a very potent one for the
success or failure ot the republican party,
If Mr. Carter or any other candi
date on any party ticket takes the
outlined by tlw Advertiser, they
nifeht just as well give up campaign
work. The votes of the people will go t
the candidates in favor of the enactment
of a municipal law t the next
session of tlie legislature. SocB ia tbo
manife intent of J&e republican
This is no time fer aay candidate
or any portion of the parry to attempt
to evad an iasus in the party
declaration of principle.
