SEEN ' " - ft 1 gLJL Jf FUU SIMT8S US ILLESALLT EONflCTEB AH TIN COMMITTED PERJURV AT THE TRIAL OF THE SOY. Deputy Sheriff Chillingworth Believing in the Latter Innocence Set Oat to Unravel the Mystery Strange Story Is Unfolded. Ah Tin, a Chinatown merchant, is In the clutches of the police., charged with embezzlement. A story o Oriental chicanery, perjury and cupidity Is Involved in this prosecution which. when entirely told, will exhibit In bold relief the gutta percha conscience, the cast iron nerve and the deSant of the average Celestial in a most vivid fashion. Frank Santos some weeks ago was duly convicted of embezzlement of a watch and chain which had been entrusted to his care- He insisted that he had not made away with the watch. but that it was in the safe keeping of Ah Tin. On the witness stand Ah Tin with an affidavit face swore he had never received the watch, nor had he ever seen it Other Orientals testified and swore until the case went against Santos with a rush. He was sent to jail. A feeling persisted in haunting the breast of Deputy oneriff tuillingworth that Santos was an innocent man, doomed by stress of circumstance and fate unkind to fight mosquitoes in a felon's cell. The deputy often visited the prisoner and with each inter view the conviction grew that the boy was honest and' that the guilty man was scot free. He therefore allowed Santos some leeway, in lact let him out on his own recognizance for the purpose of un ravelling the maze of Oriental fabrications with the hope of furthering the ends of justice. Santos was given SIS in marked coin Thursday evening and with the shrewd deDuty proceeded o the storp of Ah Tin. Chillingworth remained on the outside. Santos went in and laid the SIS upon the counter. Ah Tin, with a Confucian halo radiat ing above nis snaven neau. anu witn his afSuavit face embellished bv a greedy grin, dropped the shekels into a mysterious pocket, stooped behind the counter and produced the watch and chain that had been missing since August. At this stage of the game rushed in and placed Ah Tin under arrest. On the wav to the station the unperturbed Chinaman said tnat he had had the watfh since-August; that at the trial of Santos he had iie watch in his possession, but denied z because Santos owed him. $18 and to hold the watch was the only way to retain securitv for this -debt. Ah Tin is held to have perjured himself and coollv allowed an Innocent man to go to iail. merelv because he hld a debt bf $18 against him. The Chinaman will be held on the charge of embpzzlement, to which may be added th3t of perjury. i Habeas Corpus Case The habeas corpus a lock of her hair ' i ' but- that 'was enough to attract much at- en at the fashionable ballroom.
