VOL. II. NO So. HONOLULU, HAWAIIAN ISLANDS, TUESDAY, APRIL 27, 1886. l'l0 WHOLE NO. 203.
WOMEN AND WOMEN.
Somo women can not build
Tho broken altars of tliclr hoarta np p
straight,
Their weak hands are unskilled
Toincnd tho breach that perfidy has
mado,
And ralso behind tho gate-
Of pride, somo newer altars in tho Bhado
Ol first dead hopes.' Such womon, it is
said,
Sit over walling o'er tholr faithless dead.
Their idols, when they fell,
Shook the twain. fair shrine and rent the veil In J
And evermore a knell
Bung by tho ghastly wraith of hopo belled,
Walls a requiem of undying pain,
And moves tho crushed dead at tho altar
side.
While the dull blasts of ruined love and
trust,
Eddy around in clouds the dustl
Rnmn. In thn rmmbinc shock
Of crumbling altars, sink to rise more
strong, ,
And Imlld complotor altars on tho rock
Of womanhood; to cast tho past away
Without a tear for what is lost, nor long
For the bright phantoms of a vanished
day;
But to their new throned idols incense
bring,
Baying, "The king is dead, long live 'tho
king!"
They find a worthier dust
And raiso it o'er tho altars of tho past,
And love it dearly, ns a woman must
They even forget in happier hours their
loss
Of former idols, saying with smiles at last
"How could wo deem our broken dreams
a cross f"
Which aro tho noblest soulsf Those who
forgot,
Or those who mourn their first sweet idols
yetr Clare Beatrice Coffey.
Russia's Fleet of Submarine BoaU. at
Russia is very sweet upon submarine
boats, and is buildlug a good many of
them at the present moment. In torpedoes
she had the start, and, in spite of
Hobart Pasha, considers that they rendered
her immense assistance in the
Turkish war, and at any rate prevented
her naval prestige from utterly collapsing.
England, Germany and France have
now altogether beaten her in the torpedo
race, and she hopes to recover ground by
swift and inexpensive success with submarine
boatB. In 1878 Russia paid a
heavy sum for a invention
in that line, and began building at
Cronstadt quite a small lleot ol ttiem.
However, tho few that survived the
Berlin treaty nearly all wont to the
bottom during experimental practice, and
tho matter dropped until last spring-Russia
purposely doing so, in order to
avoid exciting foreign powors to emulate
her enterprise in submarine boats. Then,
when the Afghan question cropped up,
sne paid another heavy lump sum for a
French invention, and constructed fifty
boats for tho'defenso of Cronstadt. Every
pains was taken to keep tho existence of
this secret, and it is only now that
has excited attention by his experiments,
that they have been openly
mentioned by the Russian authorities.
However, no experiments with the fifty
boats havo been made except in a quite
shallow canal, and until they havo
cruised about in the rougher waters, of
the gulf of Finland tho other powers will
hardly do more than wish Russia Joy in
the possession of her bandbox treasures.
Brooklyn Eagle.
Concentration of the Itlack ltaee.
There is a steady concentration of tho
colored people upon tho borders of the
gttlf of Moxlco. Their numbers are Increasing
In a greater relative ratio than
the whites. But there are fewer of them
in Kentucky, Vlrclnla, and North Caro
lina than formerly, and more In the states
farther south. Tho whites in these more
southern regions are leaving for the west
and north, so that in course of time, we
shall havo communities on the north
shore of the gulf of Mexico, all, or ritarly
all the members of which will be colored
people. Demorest's Monthly.
Slaking a Socond Garden of Eilen.
Dr. W. S. Webb, of New York, and his
brother-in-law, who was sufficiently fortunate
to marry a Vauderbllt, have purchased
in the town of Sholburne, Vt.,
tome 1,500 acres of land, and propose to
make it the second eartlen of Eden. All
this property lies on the east shore of
Lake Champlain. and no pains or expenso
is to bo spared In making it a second Long
Branch. Tho grounds are most pleasantly
located and some of the finest on the
lake shore. Now York Letter.
Was Certainly a Cans of Libel,
"Here, Pettifog, Tho Clarion
has denounced me as a fraud and a swindler,
and I want to sue it for llbol,"
"Well, ore the charges true t"
"Suppose they are what has that got
to do with the matter?"
"But how are you going to prove malice
In the publication f"
"Sir, I would have you understand that
In my case tho truth Is always malicious."

Discipline of the Russian Anny.
v Tho disclpllno of tho Russian army Is astonishing.
Tho codo of honor among its
officers precludes, ns In other nations, tho
resentment 01 an msuit uy a superior
through tho form of u challenge. A grund
duke insulted his regiment! Three of the
dfflcers under hhn blew out their brains
rather than endure the disgrace. Tlip offender,
seeing his fatal boorlslmess,
apologized to tho remaining gentlemen,
and saved tho force from annihilation.

Florida dumber Lost by Lightning.
Between Tallahassee and Carrabello, n
few days ago, a Tallahnsseo gentleman
counted, in a distance of thirty miles, fifty-three
trees that had been struck by lightning
so recently that they weio not yet
dead. Using this as a basis for an 'estimate,
ho concluded that Florida loses annually
over 500,000 feet of lumber destroyed
by lightning. Boston Uudget.
