Occcsional attacks of backache,

Open Window Means Health.
If you wish to be healthy and to
sleep well, you are advised by the
medical world to keep your windows
open night and day. Fresh air is
always pleasant and invigorating,
but for those who live in town par
ticularly the dwellers in an upper
flat there is the disadvantage of
having a struggle with the multitude
of smuts which travel into your room
on the wings of the wind and make
everything you touch absolutely
filthy. Here is a simple recipe
of gauze, about nine inches deep
across the upper part of the windaw
frame on the out" side. It must be
stretched rather tightly, and a
coarse butter muslin or canvass wil
be found to answer the purpose
admirably, a pale dull green color
for perference. Then your window
can always remain open. Nashville

THE WOMAtf WHQ OIVES ADVICE.
She is a very wearisome woman,
the one who gives advice.
She does not wait until you ask for
it or she thinks you need it.
She hag it in store, and if you
happen along, she pours it out on
It usually happens, too, that she
pours it more freely when you can't
use it, don't want it, wouldn't have
it, and wish she would keep still.
She has sharp eyes as a rule.
They are not bright and pretty, but
restless little beads, that look as if
they were threaded with a pin point
which pricks at every glance.
If she looks, it is to criticize: if
she listens, it is to suggest ; if she
speaks, it is to relate her experience
and explain her way.
You would meekly suggest that
you also would like to come by your
knowledge through experience ; but
she seems to be doubtful if so unim
portant an individual will ever have
any of the happenings that teach.
She means well, oh, bless her,
yes s but she is very "wearing" to
motals who come in her way, and
have mislaid their wings.
It! THE HOME.
We are not angels ; we are only
men and women, and we share the
imperfection of manhood. We
speckled apples all of us. We do
not care how deep and sweet and
tender and accordant love may ren
der the home life, it cannot but hap
pen that in the close contact in the
every day openness and disclosures
of the home, our bad points will
come out. No family Is made up of
perfectly stright sticks, but crooked
ones. And when they are piled to
gether In the closeness of home life
the crookedness will appear. The
man and woman married the most
utterly, married along the whole line
of their natures, must yet find some
point where there is not complete
contact. There is dissimilarity of
education. Before musicians can
pour forth perfect harmony, they
must bring their instruments into
perfect tune. Before two hearts
can perfectly strike together, they
must be keyed to the same note, that
cannot be altogether done before
marriage. The exact real self does
not appear in courtship. It is the

When you want to get your craifd
est Idea of a queen, you do dot think
of Cathe rine of Russia, or of Anne
of England, or Marie Theresa of
Germany, but when you want to get
your grandest Idea of a queen you
think of the plain woman who sat
opposite your father at the table
or walked with him arm in arm down
life's pathway; sometimes to the
Thanksgiving banquet, sometimes to
to the grave, but always together
soothing your petty griefs, correct
ing your childish waywardness
joining in your infantile sports
listening to your evening prayers
toiling for you with needle or at the
spinning wheel and on cold nights
wrapping you up snug and warm
And then at last on that day when
she lay in the back room dying, and
you saw her take those thin
hands with which she had toiled for
you so long, and put them together
in a dying prayer that commanded
you to the God whom she bad taught
you tc trust oh, she was tho queen
The chariots of God came down to

her now without a rush of tenderness
that stirs the deep foundaions ol

LITTLE THINGS OF UYZ.
Why is it that we so easily forget
that the little things In life are what
makes it easy or hard? A few pleas
ent words, a warm hand clasp, a
cotdial letter, are simple things, but
they are mighty in their influence
on the lives of those about us, ad
ding a ray of hope to many diicon
sulate hearts, giving a bit of courage
to disappointed, weary ones, and
helping to make our own lives sweet
er at the same time. Few people
realize how much the little attentions
of every-day life mean to their as
sociates in the hope, the church,
the business place. It is generally
a lack of consideration which makes
one forget the tiny pleasantries, but
lack of consideration is really one
form of selfishness, and selfishness
is not considered a desirable quality
Remember that the little things of
life, either good or bad, count for
more with those we love than we
ever know, and we should be watch
ful of our actions and our word.
A new freezing device is being ex
ploited in Germany, which is espec
tally adaped for domestic purposes.
The apparatus is quite inexpensive to
make and operate, It consists
merely of a double wall tin vessel
with a capacity of five gallons.
The hollow space between the two
walls Is about an inch across, By
the gradual admission of carbonic
acid into this hollow space through a
cross-arm tube, it is claimed that
water may b'e converted into Ice In
the space of sixty seconds and that
meats, fruits and beverages, such as
beer or wine, may be chilled or froz
en in a few seconds. The effect Is
produced by the sudden great re
duction of temperature caused by
the rapid expansion of the carbonic
acid, which Is admitted from an or
dinary carbonic acid resevolr.
