In a rural district In Virginia
here was a man of great Influence
hrift, energy and sterling qualities
generally. Somewhat late in life
its friends were greatly delighted
when be finally turned some of his
attention and energy to "higher
, hlngs and joined the Baptls church.
i They at once made him a deacon
I and all went well for a time. Finally
i great association was hilled for that
hurch and every brother was expict
k'd to do his part, such as taking
'are of visitors from a dlstanco
;tc. Of course this brother had his
full share. When going out one
morning to board the surrles, bug
gies, etc., to start to church., dres
sed in their good clothes, the good
wife reminded the deacon they
had forgotten to feed the calf.
(They had an orphan calf In a two-
falat pen In the back yard) The
wife told the deacon the plan of milk
could be found on tho back porch,
and to be careful as tho pan was
full. He got the pan, wen carefully
to the pen and the calf being
hungry and impatient put his mouth
.hurriedly into the pan gave a snort
and blew milk all over the deacon's
Sunday clothes. This being more
than he could stand well, he clenched
his teeth, reached between the slats,
gathered the orphan by the ears
and exclaimed: If I was not In the
service of the Lord Jesus Christ I
would Jab your d n soso through
tho bottom of this pan."
Governor Reed. It looks good and
it sounds good. A man well quali
fied to fill the position, straight and
square, one who la not a professional
politician. A candidate without blot
or blemish, one who has not been
aligned with any faction. Is not he
the kind we need at the head of the
Democratic ticket to lead it to sue
cess in November!
