..The Libby Herald.. PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY BY THE HERALD PUBLISHING COMPANY G. E. SHAWLER - - BusinessMgr. Entered as second-class matter August 17, 191q, at the postoffice at Libby, Mon tana, under the Act of March 3, 1879. THURSDAY, OCT. 5, I91g. ONE HOUR. Is it worth one hour of your time to assist in benefitting yourself and in building up the community ? It takes the united effort of all to accomplish prac tical results. The Libby Com mercial club meets at Plummer hall Monday evening, Oct. 9, at 8 o'clock. Come and gtve your ideas for the building of a Ureater Libby. You will be benefitted by absorbing the spirit of progressiveness and may enthuse some one else. They See the Point. We will have to take off our hats to the people of Jackson 'county, Oregon, when it comes to bonding for roads. They have just voted $r,Soo,ooo in bonds for puclic highways. The vote in favor of the proposition was overwhelming, and Jackson county, of which Med ford is the county seat, will have a system of highways that cannot be excelled anywhere in the country. In the passage of this bond issue Jackson county has set a precedent in the state of Oregon regarding good roads construction. The city of Medford, in a total vote of 1638, gave 1503 in favor of the proposi tion. Jackson county is one of the big fruit and farming districts of Oregon and it goes without the saving that there will now be a development there that will make it one of the wealthiest and most prosperous sections in the Pacific northwest. The display of finished wood products of the Libby districts made at the state fair by the Libby Lunm ber company, was donated by re quest to the Helena high school, where it will be placed on exhibit, and also serve as a part of the school work in forestry studies. Our Great President. Can anyone tell what Taft has to show for that extra session of congress which cost the people so many thousands of dollars? His one great feature of his administra tion-the reciprocity pact with Canada-upon which he expected to go before the country and point t" with pride, was buried under an avalanch of votes by our northern neighbors. No matter what moved the Canadians to reject the treaty, it was rejected, and very emphati ically. Of course Taft has his arbitration Libby Steam Laundry W. B. LIBBY, Gen. Mgr. PRESCRIPTIONS CAREFULLY COMPOUNDED treaties to fall back on as another feather in his cap of wonderful achievement in great statesman ship. But while congress hesitates to accept them, and Roosevelt con demns them, we see two European powers at each other's throats and he is a wise man who can tell the end. With the Balkans always a powder house, it will not need much to make arbitration promises go up in smoke all over Europe. We all want peace and freedom from strife, but if the Taft scheme means the nullification of the Monroe doc trine, as many of our leading men contend, how long would this country stand for that? Not any longer than to the time some for eign power brushed aside this time honored policy. While the president is chasing rainbow reciprocity ideas that don't reciprocate and arbitration treaties that won't work, he let a golden opportunity slip by to turn the special session to some practical benefit to the people by favoring a gennine downward revision of the tariff, as the people demanded at the polls last fall, instead of hiding behind a tariff hoard which he had appointed. The tariff board was not an issue at the last election and the voters had no idea of delegat ing this legislation to it for its ap proval. The republicans paid no attention to a tariff board when they foisted the Payne-Aldrich bill upon the country, but when the storm of protests began to roll up they find it a handy weapon to de lay tariff reductions. Meanwhile the Payne-Aldrich hill remains in full working force while the people pay the freight. The farmers' free list bill, as a compensatory measure for the one sided reciprocity pact : the wool and cotton schedules-all were blocked by the presidential veto He even carried the one-man power to the point of coercing Arizona and New Mexico into accepting his views to, attain statehood, al though the people of those terri tories had previously stated at the polls what they wanted in their constitutions. By his veto of the wool bill has the president especi ally laid himself open to criticism, for he has publicly characterized the wool schedule of the Payne Aldrich bill as "indefensible." The result of his veto is to keep this in defensible schedule in force until such time as the tariff board which he appointed has submitted its re port. Is it any wonder that the presi dent has found it necessary to take the stump in a trip covering 13,000 miles and reaching across the con tinent, in efforts to explain his in consistencies and shortcomings ? Large crowds greet him every where, for he is the president, and he is given considerate attention and the highest honors. But in such insurgent strongholds like Kansas and Iowa come reports that the meetings are a frost. The peo ple are there, but they refuse to warm to him atnd the insurgents are still insurging.
