T?MU.y's ck market "Was an unusually artCve use fur a half liolldny. The dis trllMtOor. of business was also phenom enal. The total sales for the two hours were over 900,000 shares, yet only two stocks supplied 10 per eent or more of tte total transactions. They were St. Paul common aiHl Northern Pacific pre forreil. The revival of interest in Northern Pact ttc securities appeared to come chiefly from abroad. Northern Pacific preferred was more active than any other stock and netted the greatest advance. Tm? market as a whole showed a great deal of irregularity, owing to the closing of contracts for both accounts, because of the suspension of business of business until next Tuesday rooming. Net changes for the day "were unimport ant except u the few cases already noted. The transactions In bonds was over three millions par value during the week, and, as was the case n the stock market, th tendency has been steadily toward higher figures. New Torlc Stock jun-ket. "While in Lon don, .Americans were reported good, the chief strength was in the lower priced is fcucs, which -were higher, while the higher priced stocks were rather neg lected. St. Paul wab, however, bought In New York by London. The general market daring tlie three bours of tlie session was quite str&ng, considering the approach of the holidays. The close was strong, with about tlie best prices of the day, so that the week may be raid to have closed with cnoouragement to the bulls. The earnings of the Missouri Pacific Cor the fourth week in August increased 5270.000. The earnings of the year to date stoow an increase of ?S94,000. The earnings of Atchison for July show a net decrease of SCI, 000 Canada Pacirlc earnings Tor the fourth -week in August Increased $8,000. During the month the increase was $206,000. From Janu ary l the increase has been $177,000. Beading shows a net Increase for July of $137,000. There Is considerable bull talk with re gard to the Louisville & Nashville Issues The stock bah looked -well within the last two or three days, and people are predict ing that it will go much hlcber. The sug LAST CALL ! idsummer Clearance Sale Wind Up Saturday, September n. gestions are that four weeks from nxt "WedneMlny the stockholder, will meet at Louisville and receive tlie annual state ment; tnat they will find, notwithstand ing the hard limes of '9G and the early part of '07, nearly 4 per cent earned on tlie stock; that this per cent wa equaled only by the Kock Islnud and not approach ed by Omaha, while both of these prop erties cell from 20 to 30 points higher than Louit-vlile and Nashville, and that Louisville and NaKhville is iower now than In 1895, at the top of the boom of that year, while some of the granger stocks are 12 per eent higher than then. Dow, Jones & Co., Eay of Burlington: The B. Q. statement was disappointing, not because it was poor, but because expec tations had lx"n fixed too high. It -was remembered very quickly, however, that the railroad did not begin to improve In earnings i.iatcrially until about the middle of July, and that B. Q. earnings conse quent!;. nowed only about half of what would lie considered at present the normal increase. The fact tint R. 1. increased for August $375,000, -was the best indica tion of what B. Q. did in August K. 1. had but little increase in July. "With all this reasoning, however, the telling in 3. Q. looked rather good and traders especially were inclined to sell it short as a hedge against St. P. Bulls on B. Q say the stock is having a rest but will give a good account of Itself in due time." Sugar sliowed no particular strength yes terday, though it recovered somewhat from the prices of Friday. There seems good reason, however, for believing that this week will show a recovery to around 160 again. If that figure is not even passed. The reasons why Sugar should advance are still operative at 100. Sugar preferred isoneof the best things in th market, un questionably. There is such an absolute certainty in the payment of its dividends as very few stocks show, anil yet paying 7 per cent, it is fat from being at Its rightful price. Chicago Gas should be a purchase this week, for most of the friends of the com pany are averting very strenuously and with much confidence. Henry Clews & O., In their weekly letter, print a ta.ble showing the range of prices on the New JToik Stock Exchange during thr two months since the low figures of June With the table it is pointed out tint the rammer transactions on the exchange have fr exceeded alt precedents in former like n-ont'is.and indeed hive surpassed the dealings of ny equal period in the history of the exchange. These very optimistic prophets, however, acknowledge that there is a pessimistic clement which docs not believe In the permanency of all this joy. The lable shows that in every case there has been an advance in prices. "The aerage rise has been about S 1-1 points. On eight stocks, the advance has been below 5 points, and on sixteen stocks between 5 ami 10 points. Considering (he great excitement in the market and the magnitude of the transactions, thu rise thus far realized can hardly be re garded as very extraordinary. It is cer tainly far from sufficing to restore values to the normal level that existed before the great depression set in; and very far from corresponding to the great restora tion of agriculture, of industry and of commerce upon which the country has now entered. The most difficult problem of railroad op ciation -how to communicate by telegraph with a moving train anywhere on the line has been solved by a young Chicago inven tor. Edison, who lias been experimenting with induction currents, has been rairly beaten on his own chosen ground. George V. Trott, a former telegraph op erator, has devised a system which will shortly be put In operation on the Pennsyl vaniaRallroad, by which every train on the lino is in constant communication with the stalioanext ahead, and, when desired, with the tram dlspatcheror any public telegraph station. Uy the use of this system head-on and rear end collisions will alike be prevented, the liability of accidents of all binds will be lessened manyfold, and the running time of both freight and passenger trains will be materially Increased. In addition to all this, passengers will be able to send or receive a telegram from any part of the world, and market quotations can be posted in the "United" every hour. A merchant can bo in con stant reach of his office or his broker, and if the price of wheat takes a sud den shoot upward or downward he can send tne proper ordir without leaving the train. Last, but not least, the occupation of the train robbers who go through the express and mail cars between stations will bj gone as soon as every iailway train is in tele graphic communication with the outside world. Briefly, evry train on a road equipped with the Trott system would at all times be on a "loop" circuit, extending to the next telegraph ntr.tlon ahead, and to send messages further or receive them from other stations the oparator at the proper station would only have to "cut in" b means of a "Jackspriug" on one of the regu lar telegraph wires. Mr. Trott'a device is exclusively mechan ical. It involves no new or untried prin ciples, and will require no more power to operite It t ban the ordinary duplex cell bat tery at the regular telegraph station. The device, which railway engineers de clare will revolutionize railway science, is an adaptation of the street railway trolley or third rail of the elevated railways. Two Insulatd metallic tracks arc laid between and parallel to the traction rails. They are not connected, and at Intervals equal In length to the circuit it is desired to establish are discontinuous and separated by 0. non-conducting cushion. A trolley mechanism, consisting of three pairs of wheels, connected In multiple hy "knuckle ' Joints and hinged to the footboard of the engine, runs under the tender 011 the inner rails. Tlie contact of the metallic whet-Is wlMi the metallic rail clones the circuit, as the wheels are joined by a metallic frame work. Insulated wires conduct the current Into the engine cab and by means of the bell cord Into any part of the train where there is an instrument. Chicago Tribune. Americans in Office in Samon. Beside him is a clever pug dog, with a tin sign, bearing the legend, "Please h.lp the blind" swinging from his collar, to which is attached a tlncup to receive the offerings of the innocents. The other day a man who had often dropped a small coin Into the cup saw the organ grinder sitting at a table In a restaurant, calmly reading a bill of fare. "I thought jou were blind?" he queried. "The sign ain'tonnie,Isit?"replied the musical mendi cant, who was ordering a meal fit for a hard-working man. Here's at least oue successful example of "trying It on the dog." Pittsburg Dispatch.
