A pair of those interesting, entertaining
Udies,' who seem to carry on bo large a
business iD the ayof procuring subscrip
tions for new -works, and who are so fas
cinating in manner, so delightfully' im
portunate, to sweetly tm-get-rid-able, called
a few mornings siuce, at a young lawyer's
office, for the purpose of getting him to
subscribe. "Indeed, ladies," said he, "the
partnership of which I am but an humble
member, has lately been so imprudent as
to issue a new work of their own, whioh,
in .consequence, of the . enormous expense
attending its illustrations, embellishments,
&C, has completely crippled us.". . "Then,
perhapa," replied the angelic canvassers,
"we could procure you some srbscribers.
What do you call your, work ?" "Well,
we have not fully determined on that yet,
but I gues'3 I'll let my wife hare her own
wav, and call it after me Charles Henry."
Anxious to Marhy. Once, in a
church, a young man carried the collec
tion plate . around. Before starting, he
deposited what he. thought to be a small
coin in the, plate. In the congregation
wero a number of young and pretty girb,
and these, when the plate was presented
to them, without exception blushed and
commenced giggling. The young man
was considerably confused when he found
that, instead of a shilling, he had deposit
ed a. conversation lozenge in the plate,
with the words "Will you marry me X"
across its face. . r :
. Pbococious. An urchin leading a
mall dog along the street was accosted
by a gentleman as follows :
"What's yo'ir dog's name 7" - -l:ilain't
got any name yet ?"
..'Well, wby don't jou name him 7
Give " him sonic good name. Call him
"Won't do that; 'twould be disrespect

"Well, thon, call him Andrew John

would be disrespectful to the dog I"
The Twentieth. A farmer'6 wife,
after having her child baptized in church,
waited in the vestry till service was 07er
to have the registrar's certificate endorsed
in the usual manner. The minister, not
being quito-sure of the day of the month,
laid in an interrogative tone:
"This is the twentieth, I think 7"
The worthy matron, understanding the
query to refer to the number of her fami
ly, vtry indignantly retorted :
think, fiir, you're ;very impudent, for
