TOOMBS AND STEPHENS
How Fiery Bob Beat Alex H OUt
of the Senatorship
Ehe serious illness of Bob Toombs at
his home in Washington Georgia recalls
a story which Alexander Stephens used
to tell here a t how Toombs beat him
out of the senatorphip in the days before
the war Both Stephens and Toombs
were anxious to go to the Senate and it
was the ambition of Alexander Stephens
life Many of his friends and some of
the newspapers of Georgia had made
favorable mention of Stephens as a sen
atonal candidate but Tombs was not
much spoken and he hadnot pulled
any wires to bring himself before the pub
lic He noted Stephens popularity but
he was sure he could be elected himself
if he could get Stephens out of the way
He determined to do this i he could
through Stephens friendship for him
The first thing he did said Mr Ste
phens was t come over to my house
one day on his way to court knowing
that I was going over myself attend t
some business I alwaysrode on horse
back in those days and Tooinbs knew it
So he drove up to my house in his buggy
just as I was about t get on my horse
and said Hello Aleck hello I Where
are you going
Why 7 I answered lam going over
t court Where are you going
U T i courts too Have your blanked
old horse put up and ride with me in my
buggyhad
Jhad my horse put up and got into
the buggy with Toombs We went along I
for about twelve miles when we got to a
creek Toombs stopped the horse got
out and loosened the reins so that the
animal could drink While he was doing
this he said Aleck I see that some of
the papers are bringing you out for Sen i
ator Do you want it I replied that I
did not that I did not care anything for
itA as thoughtToombs answered
Well Aleck if you dont want it I do
Im crazy after it So I want you to pull
off your coat roll up your sleeves and go
t work for me O course concluded
Stephens I couldnt help myself after
what I had said and so Bob Toombs
cheated me utf the genato hip I
went t work for him and he was elected II
An old Georgian said to me last night
speaking of the friendship between
Stephens and Toombs Bob Tombs
did a great deal for Alexander Stephens
At one time Stephens was about 20000
i debt and he was very much embar
rassed Toombs found him in the dumps
and on being told what wasthe matter he
got a list of Stephens indebtedness and
settled it to the last dollar In looking
over the papers there was one bill which
he could not find but he told Stephens
that he had paid i and it never turned
up to bother him I think Stephens
afterward repaid the deb Bob Toombs I
wanted Georgia to buy Stephens home
knownas Liberty Hall and to make i
into a memorial school He would not
contribute anything himself and told the
canvasser he did not want the thing built
by individual contributions Said he I
want the people of Georgia to buy the
property and when they do I will endow
itwith enough t make it such a college
as little Aleck would like to see there i
he were alive I may be that such
provision will be found in Genera

CHARM OF AMERICAN WOMEN
An Englishman Gives His Reason

Archibald Forbes in Souvenirs of Some

threshold u certain bewilderment and
even embarrassment forthe British male

citadel of the fort seems t him strangely
impregnable because of the cool alert

Human natureis human nature all the

than the prevalent one among us that
domesticity is not a leading virtue of
American married couples That there
is too much of hotel life for American
