i GRANT
I
Various Views of His s
at Sprluefield
New York 21The Tribune com
monte thus on the Illinois convention
Grant has won a victory in Illinois it
may bo conceded Still it is not a vie
tory of a character greatly to encourage
the advocates of hn nomination or to du
courage 1D the least opponents of
the third term scheme Be Ls gained
what was conceded to him from the tart
what in fact it was absolutely
neces
sary that ho should get in order to enter
the race at Chicago He has in short
carried his ttito as Elaine Sherman
Edmund and Windom have carried
theirs A candidate who cannot secure
his own stite is summarily dropped from
the list in obedience to a custom as od
as thA residential elections Its suc
cess however is of such a character and
was won by such strenuous efforts from
the jaws of defeat that it shows his weak
ness rather than his strength It con
spicuously exhibits the rapid degeneracy
of hn caodidicy which began with
boastful confidence of sw cping the coun
try by a spontaneous outburst of popular
feeling and has now got to such a pass
Ihftl his supporters find cause for rrjuic
mg in the fact that he bus barely escaped
njectionin his own sUte
The Times lumps the days business
and rays Without claiming anything
from Colorado the events of yesterday
may bo fairly expected to iccure the 16
votes j of Louisiana i for Grant As tbe
conventions of the last two named states
will close the scries we should consider
it within the truth to assume that the
Grant strength on thc eve of the nominal
convention will not fall short of 350
vote As there are 31 delegates electee
from the various slates who are without
instructions or expressed preferen es
and as in the ranks ot tho nominal Ed
munds Wasbburne and Windom not
to say Blame and Sherman delegates
there arc many of whom Grant is second
choice no political event cm be much
more certain than that Grant will Lo the
nominee of tho republican party for presi
dent of the United States
Tho Herald says The Illinois con
vention is i the turning point af tho pre
liminary republican canvass It has been
so obvious that the success ic dceat of
Grant as the republican cndidsta de
pend d on its action that the most stren
uous and arduous exertions have beer
made by his opponents to deprive him of
the prestige of Illiooi votes in the
republican national convention The
Grant victory will go fIr a gcal
deal more than tho number of dele
gates gained We have no longer any
doubt that General Grant will be trium
phantly nominated at Chicago on the
first ballot Southern negroes are totally
misrepresented by the delegates which
Sherman has secured through office hold
ing influence They cannot be held for
a day after it is seen that G ant is cer
tain to bo nominated The Herald
concludes li remarkable article as fol
lows General Grant will not only ba
nominated on the first ballot bat nomi
nated with such a display of effusive and
outpouring enthusiasm as will make his
rivals wish to forget that they had ever
arrayed against him as opposing candi
dates General Grant is the only fit
candidate for the presidency Of course
wo do not man by this that no other
citizen of the United States would make
x good administration but thoso who are
best qualified refuse to run against him
declaring their opinion of his superior
fitness Tho practical choice lies between
him and his immediate rivalr and in
this restricted field we bavo no hesitation
in saying that he it the only fit candi
date
