election return under our law is in
the French plantations of Arooitook
where the assessors sign the returns
expressed in language with which
they are entirely unacquainted I do
know frands have been committed
there in past year by democratic
agents and I repeat that nowhere else
in Maine is fraud practicable Blame
says also Chairman Barnum is also
in palpuble error when he assumes
that all the election returns should be
at Augusta the day after the election
Maine has a larger territory than the
other fin New England states to
gether and the most southwestern

morning the relatives of Miss Chase
who in a state bordering on insan
ity married a disreputable negro
named Sam Monroe and who was
secured by her relatives some days
since was brought into town and
with her three brothers and uncle en
tered the train to go to Peoria Mon
roe who had been released from jail
where he was confined for the ap
peared on the platform and walking
defiantly up to the party said Good
morning brother Horace where
upon the young man knocked I
him down borrowed a revolver and
began to shoot and chased the negro
through the crowd when he tried to
escape Monroa Also having a revolver
in his band all the time Monroe was
bit in the arm but not hurt and a
bystander named Crocker was
severely injured by a shot Monroe
eventually escaped but much excite
ment is manifest among the negroes
who all side with him and among
the white population whose sympa
hies are all on the other side A
conservator has been appointed for
Miss Chase in Chicago whither she
will be taken
