At last evenings session of the council
there was morevim and energy noted than
toted
usual and among the most important busi
ness of the night was the presentation and
discussion of the report of the committee
on streets which recommended the use of
vitrified brick for sidewalks The com
mittee after considering the cost of laying
sidewalks and the urgent need of same said
We are of the opinion that for utility cheap
ness and cost of repairs that hard or vitri
fied brick walks take precedence Much
of the prejudice against brick pavements
or sidewalks ant the doubt as to their
durability is based upon the experience in
using common building brick that were im
properly or insufficiently burned We
do not doubt thaI if properly
burned brick be used according
to the plans and specifications
prepared by our engineer that these objec
tions will be overcome Suitable brick are
made here and the money expended in the
manufactured same and laying of side
walk would not go outsido of the city The
immediate necessity of goodwalks in this
city cannot be overestimated We would
recommend that the city ngineer furnish
estimates for the cost of laying brick
walks on tho following streets and side
walks In district Nos 1 and 2 both sides
of First Soutb from west line of Seventh
East to the east line fcf Fourth West and
both sides of West Temple from First
South to South Temple In districts 3 and
4 both sides of Second South from west
line of Seventh East to west line of Fifth
West We recommend that a new district
be created called district No 12 to include

both sides of South Temple from the east
line of East Temple to thb east line of
Third West
Further that where permanent walks are
already laid that the abutting property be
not taxed and further that where the im
provements arenot of a permanent nature
and where abutting owners prefer some
other material that they shall be nllowei
to construct such walks provided they do
so immediately This is a matter that can
beadjusted fairly by the board of equal

would recommend tae laying of a slxfoot
sidewalk and balance of the district covered I
bythis report to lay an eightfoot walk 1
The cost as estimated will be for the six
foot walk 65 cent per front foot on 1

test against the dilaty policy of the coun
cil in dealing with tb uestion of public

council meet every night from this time on
until something definite had been done wit
the paving question and also with the city
and county building project
This sentiment brougUt forth a round of
applause from the inudspjashpd spectators
in attendance
On motion of Councilman Pembroke the
report was made special order for a special
meeting to be held next Friday evening

The bill for an ordinance further regulat
ing the issuance of liquor licenses in this

attorney and offered an amendment re

cause it was prohibition not restriction

after no liquor license shall be granted
against the remonstrance of persons own

flumes became blocked and the water backed
antI flooded the streets tn I sidewalks in some
cases surrounding the hones and cutting off 1
mtaus of approach except by the use of gum
boots or siVks One of those who found himself
in this predicament was Mr George Brice who
lives at the corner of Second West and Fourth
South After considerable perSuasion the
deputy watermaster of another district was i
duced to go to work and he succeeded in releasing
leasing the imprisoned waters and allowed
Brice to reach his home

in the payment of special taxes for water main
extensions The meeting Is for the residents of
all parts of the city and it Is especially important
to those whose water main taxes are now pend
ing Those who will in the future have to pay
for the extension of the mains are also invited
to attend as the proceedings will also concern
them It is the intention to test the legality of
the special tax for water mains and i enough
