Republicans believe in the rule of the
people said one man with bitterness
but when it comes to choosing candi
dates we must take orders from the

The refusal of Mr Daly to jump into
the scrimmage and attempt to pull the
factions together gives other men their
day Ezra Thompson had quite a boom
Saturday but to judge from current
comment he Is regarded as a sort of
Hobsons choice by the Lannanized
faction they will take him if they cant

and John J Daly have absolutely re
fused to be used the batteries have
been trained upon George T Odell and
with such success that Mr Odell has
consented to consider the matter for
this week There is an old saying that
he who hesitates is lost When ques
tioned upon the subject yesterday Mr
Odell said he was silent at this time
but would give a final answer later in
the week

Late Auditors Son Will Probably Be
Appointed
The unexpected death of City Audi
tor George Swan was a topic for gen
eral discussion yesterday and natu
rally the mode of filling the vacancy
caused by his death and the person
liable to be chosen came in for their
due share of the discussion
The appointment of Mr Swans suc
cessor will be made by Mayor Clark
by and with the consent and advice of
the council as provided for by the
statutes
No one is authorized to speak for the
mayor as to whom he would name for
the place but the opinion seems to pre
vail that the deceased auditors son
Douglas A Swan A ill be chosen This
young gentleman was formerly cashier I
of the First National bank of Provo
He performed the duties of the office of
auditor very acceptably for a month
last summer while his father was ab
sent on his vacation so that he is fa
miliar with the duties of the office
Mr Swans term of office would have
expired on the first day of January
next So satisfactory was his record as
auditor that his name has been often
mentioned as a candidate for a nomin
ation on the Republican ticket this fall
although he waselected two years ago
as a nonpartisan The salary of the
office Is 1500 per annum

That was the verdict of the neigh
bors weeks ago and soon will it be put
into execution The board of managers
of the home have leased the old Loof
bourow residence on Twelfth East near
Brigham street and are having it fitted
up to be used in place of the homes
present location And the neighbors
around C street are happy over the re
moval
But an unforeseen obstacle has been
presented A Twelfth East resident
has announced his intention of keep
ing the home out of his locality if pos
sible and he Js backed by most of his
neighbors If the same protest is made
up in the eastern part of town as was
made along Sixth street it Is yet pos
sible that the board will have trouble
The Loofbourow place leased by
Judge Loofbourow is a twostory
frame structure containing eight rooms
and is more commodious than the
building now occupied The lease in
figures is the equivalent to 25 per

work at the state fair grounds arrang
ing exhibits hammering pounding and
piling boxes on boxes to make a dis
play which will delight the crowds that
will flock to the ground tomorrow
This is going to be the most success
ful fair that Utah has ever seen for
there are more entries than ever before

Putting Up the Decorations
There are over 1400 entries of exhibits
of all characters and these including
horses cattle chickens manufactur
ing and agricultural products must be
in place this evening The entries close
this afternoon
Within the main building the exhib
its and booths are yet in some disor
der Boxes of goods are strewn over
the floor ready to bexplaced in artistic
and attractive appearance carpenters
are at work building shelves and stalls
for the goods laying about and those
to come today Secretary Sears said
yesterday afternoon that the exhibits
would be in place and the rubbish
cleaned out of the building by Tues
day morning
In the south wing where many car
penters are at work there are yet no
signs of the many things which will
1 fill it But there will be honey and bees
I and agricultural products the best

cannot be moved in until the last mo

when they learn that such silk can be
produced in Utah The spun reeled and
woven silk is very fine
On the south side of the main build
ing will be placed the fruit of all kinds
in all methods of preserving I Is now
kept on cold storage so that it will be
fresh when placed on the shelves Sec
retary Sears said that it will be the
finest show of fruit the state has ever
known
But the many visitors from the coun
try who will flock into Salt Lake dur
ing the church conference will proba
bly be chiefly Interested in the cattle
horse and chicken exhibits All the

There will be over 4000 chickens and
fowls of every description to awake

they had so unceremoniously left the
cavalry at the Presidio The boys were
deserters from the national guard as well
as the regular army and had their uni
forms when they returned from San
Francisco The officers decided to re
cover them and detailed a squad from
company B to find and arrest the men
Accordingly a week ago yesterday Nel
son was taken into custody fa the corner
of Second South and State streets by the
guardsmen He gave up his uniform and
for some reason or other the case of de
sertion frOm the guard was dropped Ihe
same with De Shazo The detail had him
in custody out near theold copper plant
the same night ahd securing his uniform
< allowed him to depart in peace The

matter not knowingJ the facts and when
on Monday It became known to the re
cruiting officers that the guard had had
the men they wanted so muob there w s
weeping and wailing and gnashing of
teeth But De Shazo had flown Nelson
