and asked tho delegates to vacate

Alabama took the gavel and Intro
duced Charles A Walsh of Iowa sec
ictary of the provisional national
committee who read the call for the
convention This document declared
the purpose of the gathering to be
the foundation of an Independence
party and tho nomination of candi
dates for president and vice presi
dent
Father OCallalmn of Chicago do
livered the Invocation Mr Howard
at the conclusion of the Invocation
announced tho names of the tern
porary officers of the convention Hit
mention of the name of Mr Hearst
was received with an outburst of ap
plause and Mr Hearst when he
mounted the rostrum escorted by a
committee of three appointed by the
chair was given an uproarious wel
come When quiet had been re
stored he began his address as tern
porary chairman of the convention

of Chicago tho convention adjourned
until 2 oclock Tuesday
The committee on rules and per
manent organization which met Im

as permanent chairman and adopt
ed a rule that no speech from the
platform should exceed five minutes

Judge W H Taft at noon on Tues
day accepted the nomination ot the
Republican party to bo its candidate
for the presidency
Political leaders from far and near
gathered to give the affair Its pout
cal significance while from the city
nnd surrounding suburbs tho friends
neighbors and admirers of Judge
Taft among his own townspeople
turned out In countless numbers and
without regard to party affiliation
Senator William Warner of Mis
souri past commaiulorlnchlef of the
G A R headed tho notification com
mittee which consisted of a member
of every state territory and Island
possession of the nation The repre
sentatives of tho committee were
chosen from the delegations attend
ing the nominating convention at Chi
cago There also were present many
members of the national committee

route from Chicago to Washington
and New York
Senator Warners speech of notifi
cation was brief and when ho had
concluded speaking there was an en
thusiastic outburst of applause as
Judge Taft stopped forward After
formally accepting the nomination
tendered by the chairman of tho noti
fication committee Jutfgo Taft
launched out at once without picture
apostrophe or any attempt oratory
into tbe very essence of his declara
tion of principles the first portion of
his remarks being a declaration that
Republican strength lies In a mainte
nance of the Roosevelt principles
He dwelt at some length upon what
tire president hap dono In the line of
reform and declared the chief func
tion of tho administration to be a
clinching of what already has been
accomplished He asserted In com
paring tho platforms of the two old
parties that the Republican declara
tion is progressive and regulative
while the Democratic Is radical and
destructive Judge Taft discussed
trusts labor injunctions tho physi
cal valuation of railroads the cur
rency the postal savings banks
which ho declared were preferable to
the Democratic plan of government
guarantee of deposits publicity of
campaign contributions and all other
Issues which ho regards as pertinent
in tho coming campaign Ho con
cluded with the declaration that as be
tween the two old parties tho differ
ence consisted of the fact that with
Republican success there would be
prosperity with Democratic victory
there would bo disaster

of fifteen fires having been charged
against him In each caso he col
lected the Insurance and was not sus
